The Ker siblings were children of James George Innes Ker, government appointed Inspector of Stock for the northern regions, based in Burra from the late 1870s through to the mid 1880s. Augusta and Sarah Bock were sisters from Burra who married William and Robert Ker.

The horse is possibly 'Sunflower', who was a hurdles horse owned by Ker, and won the Adelaide Racing Club Grand National Meeting hurdles race in August 1897. In addition to his successful livery and coach/horse hire business in Port Pirie, Ker owned racehorses and acted as a buyer for others.
