Sold 1971 having been laid up since 1969. Late 1973 sold by order of the court on account of accumulated debts. New owner commenced making alterations and it is believed she was to be converted into a tuna fishing boat but was found to be unsuitable and she was demolished in Port Adelaide mid 1975. [On back of photograph] Head and shoulders portrait of white haired and bearded Captain George Beadon. In 1838 his ship 'The Conway' docked at Port Adelaide where he bought 80 acres of swamp land but left before he obtained a reciept for his purchase. Years later he recieved a receipt for land at Gawler. He claimed that the South Australian government had switched documents and that he actually owned much of Port Adelaide. See PRG 74 Series list for his claims and the response of the government. Captain Patrick Weir

Captain Patrick Weir, Port Adelaide Harbormaster. The son of Alexander and Isabella Weir, Patrick was born at Stonehaven, Scotland. He went to Sea at the age of 15 on the Craigendarroch. In 1879 he was mate on the Monalite when he left the vessel at Port Adelaide to become second officer on the Governor Musgrave. On 14 March 1882 he married Helen Christie. He owned the tug Ariel and the steamer Argyll. He later rejoined the Governor Musgrave as Captain. On the outbreak of the Boxer Rebellion he volunteered and was appointed lieutenant on the Protector. In 1915 in command of the Protector he was sent to Cocos Island to see if the German cruiser Emden could be salvaged, after which in the same year he was appointed Port Adelaide harbor master. He retired in June 1925.

S.S. Sorata on rocks

S.S. Sorata on rocks

Built in Glasgow in 1872 the Orient Line S.S. Sorata sailing from Port Adelaide to Melbourne under the command of Osbertus Graham Fowler ran onto rocks south of Cape Jervis on the evening of the 3rd September 1880. All her 368 passengers were transhipped to steam tugs, &c., and sent back to Port Adelaide; and nearly all of her cargo was saved, although some of it was considerably damaged. She remained on the rocks until 13 November, when she was removed and towed back to Port Adelaide.

'Lark' wooden schooner 139 tons aground at Port Adelaide, possibly following her collision with ss 'Darwin' at Semaphore Feb. 1890 [wooden 3 mast schooner, 179 gross, 139 net tons. ON93563. 108.0 x 22.4 x 10.6. Built 1881 Westacott and Sons, Barnstaple. First registered at Sydney in 1887. At Fremantle in 1897, at Port Adelaide in 1899 by Messrs. Seymour and in Nov. 1900. Owned by JJ Craig, the vessel was registered in Auckland. That register closed in 1909 with 'Broken up'.

'Cheopis'. [Cheopis means flea. Steel single screw steamship, ON156011, 55 gross, 25 net tons. 70.0 x 14.0 x 5.3. Built 1914 Robinson Bros. Melbourne. Compound steam engine, 34nhp, by shipbuilder, 10 knots. Owners South Australian Government's Customs and Health Department (Built as a boarding launch) Taken out of service and towed to Melbourne by SS Lady Loch Oct. 21, 1932. Sold and in 1934 registered at Port Adelaide by Kangaroo Island Transport Co. Ltd and intended for a service between Cape Jervis and Kangaroo Island. This was not successful and she was eventually sold and converted into a shark fishing boat no later than 1946. Eventually she became the property of Mr J. Anderson, of Apollo Bay, Vic. who unofficially renamed her Black Witch. She was wrecked Jan. 22 1954 at Apollo Bay. Her register was closed at Port Adelaide Customs in June 1956 with 'Vessel sunk'.]
