The 'Beltana' on Fletcher's Slip

The composite ship 'Beltana', 934 tons, on Fletcher's Slip. [Composite ship, 734 tons. ON60951 172.5 x 33.6 x 19.2. Built 1869 (4) J. Laing. Sunderland. Owners W Stevens registered London early 1870's to AL Elder and Co. Built for the South Australian trade, as her name implies, she was acquired by Elder in the first years of her life and gained some unwelcome publicity when her captain, Richard Angel, got her ashore on Kangaroo Island, 20 August 1871 on his way to load wool at Port Augusta. Having successfully refloated the vessel he did not report it. Having completed loading he set out for England, but commenced leaking so badly that he had to take the ship into Port Adelaide for repairs (photo shows her on the slip being repaired). As a result he was dismissed his ship. Ordered to load wool at Lyttelton, NZ in 1874 the ship caught fire and was badly burnt but was repaired and resumed trading. Colonial Clippers: 130 et. seq. Comprising images of: solar salt fields at Port Augusta and Port Paterson, salt fields at Dry Creek near Adelaide, quarry at Penrice and the soda ash works at Osborne, Mount Bold dam and reservoir, and numerous images of salt harvesting and quarrying machinery and vehicles including conveyors, stacker conveyors, crushers, drills, elevators and salt harvesters, in particular the 'Curdimurka' and 'Hodog' salt harvesters. The 'Yatala'

Watercolour painting of HMCS 'Yatala', with the signature and date 'E. Magraith 1904' in the bottom right hand corner. It has been painted directly onto the board, with the following inscriptions under the actual painting: on the bottom left is 'To Arthur Searcy Esq / President of Marine Board / from G.H. 1904'; in the centre is 'HMCS "Yatala" / After a painting by H.C.R. 1849'. The painting depicts the 'Yatala' just off land, in full sail and with a blue ensign flying from one of the spars. Notes on the back of the photograph state: "'Yatala' schooner. The South Australian war schooner, Yatala, 107 tons, pierced for 6 guns was built in Port Adelaide and launched 29 July 1848. Her first voyage was to the wreck of the "Tigress", near Noarlunga, 30 September 1848 during which her masts were shortened five feet. She was employed on Government marine coasting duties until May 1864 when she was sent to the Northern Territory. She was soon dispatched to Timor for repairs and was condemned there in November 1864 and was sold for 233 pounds."

The composite ship 'Torrens', 1276 tons, becalmed in the Southern Ocean. The composite ship 'Torrens', 1276 tons, at Port Adelaide [composite ship, 1335 gross tons, 1276 net tons. ON73595. 222.1 x 38.1 x 21.5. Built 1875 (10) J Laing, Sunderland. Owners: AL Elder and others, registered London (the others included her long time master, Captain SH Angel, not the one associated with 'Beltana'). Sold 1903 to Italian owners, and broken up in 1910. With the exception of the 'Loch' ships the last sailing ship to regularly carry passengers in the Australian-England trade. A very lengthy and comprehensive item in 'Colonial Clippers' gives an outline history. See pages 132 onwards. The damage caused by an iceberg, shown in some of the illustrations demonstrates the immense strength of the vessel. There are innumerable references to this vessel in books, newspaper cuttings etc. as she was a favourite passenger ship with a long career. Latter day writers frequently have called her 'The Wonderful Torrens'].

The early iron barque 'County of Ayr', 499 tons, under tow by the tug boat 'Euro'. The ship has both channels and chainplates. The iron barque (ex ship) 'County of Ayr', 499 tons, at Port Adelaide. [County of Ayr iron ship, 499 tons, ON45977, 170.0 x 17.3 x 17.3. Built 1863 (6) C. Connell and Co. Glasgow. Owners R&J Craig, registered Glasgow c.1894 sold to Port Adelaide and eventually to JA Walker. By this time rigged down to a barque. Sold in July 1901 to Messrs. Folder, Barker and Ward and Captain William Tulloch and registered at Hobart. Wrecked 23 October 1905 on Danger Reef, Otago NZ. General work before sale to Australia, usually in the coal trade when owned in Port Adelaide, and used for the transport of Tasmanian timbers until wrecked, after sale to Hobart].

The wooden barque 'Mary Blair', 311 tons, in an unidentified port [wooden 3 mast barque, 343 tons, ON64360, 141.6 x 27.0 x 14.6. Built 1870 John Duthie Sons and Co., Aberdeen. Owners: John Trager and James Ewan, registered Sydney, May 1875 Charles Dowdell, William Belbin and James Riddle (also master) registered Hobart Town: Dec. 80 Charles Dowdell: May 1887 Richard Honey, registered Port Adelaide: March 1889 Honey re-registers the vessel at Fremantle. She was sold to foreigners at Singapore in 1893. No further information. Was built as a 3 mast schooner rigged vessel and re-rigged as a barque in 1872. Intended to be a tea clipper between China, Hong Hong and Australian ports. Reference: 'Wooden Hookers of Hobart Town' page 114]. A researcher has provided the following information: 'this Port appears to be Hobart Town, with Mount Wellington in the background. The master is Captain James Riddle, who became Hobart's Harbour Master on 1 July 1879. The 'Mary Blair' was run in the China trade, captained by James Riddle, until he became Hobart Town Harbour Master on 1 July 1879, when he handed over the 'Mary Blair' to Captain Boon. The 'Mary Blair' was sold to Richard Mooney (or Money) and the registration of the ship was transferred to Adelaide in April 1887'.

The Adelaide Steam Tug Co. Ltd., registered Port Adelaide. Two funnels. Most powerful tug in South Australia until the arrival of mv 'Tusker'. Sold 1964 to KW Tidwell, Port Lincoln, for conversion to a tuna fishing boat. She was not converted and the hull was broken up in Port Adelaide during 1965. See 'Steam Tugs in SA' by Parsons]

The wooden schooner 'Gulnare', 64 tons, in Roper River, Northern Territory [wooden 2 mast schooner, 151 tons, ON41724, 103.6 x 24.2 x 10.7. Built 1856. Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, formerly owned in London and arrived in Port Adelaide Dec. 1863, having been purchased by Captain Alex McCoy and Mr E Jenkins, registered Port Adelaide as 1/1864. Sold to the South Australian Government 1869 for use in connection with the Overland Telegraph Line, and while conveying supplies to the Roper River working party, was stranded on a reef near the Vernon Islands (about 30 miles from Darwin) and after survey was condemned in October 1871. Walter Vernon Ray

Walter Vernon Ray

Walter Vernon Ray was born near Manchester in 1880 and was educated at St Peter's College and Adelaide University. He obtained his law degree in 1907 and practiced in Port Adelaide. He was a keen educationist and lover of books and became associated with the Port Adelaide Institute in 1912. He was a Freemason, past master of St. Peter's Collegiate Lodge and Principal of St Peter's Collegiate Royal Arch Chapter. He was a prominent member of the Adelaide University team. He left Port Adelaide Institute in April 1930 to take up the position of Stipendiary Magistrate at Wallaroo.
