A collection of 329 photographs of people, events and places on the Eyre Peninsula and west coast of South Australia. Places include Tallala Well, Thevenard, Wirrulla, Poochera, Minnipa, Wudinna, Mount Wedge, Haslam, Carawa, Laura Bay, Perlubie, Venus Bay, Elliston, Coulta, Tod River, Poonindie, Tumby Bay, Verran, Cleve, Arno Bay, Cowell, Kimba, Whyalla, Penong, Iron Knob. The album contains photographs which document the Back to Port Lincoln Carnival celebrations, 7-14 February 1930; photographs taken at Ceduna of the Western Australian Centenary Air Race 1929 (also known as the East- West Air Race); the refuelling stop at Ceduna of the inaugural flight of Air Mail services between Adelaide and Perth 1929 and the 130th Anniversary of the Landing of Matthew Flinders at Boston Bay, 26 February 1932. A number of sailing ships and motor vessels visiting Boston Bay between 1929 and 1933 were photographed, among them Melbourne, Olive Bank, Hougomont, Viking, Phasianella, Minnipa, King Stephen, Moonta, Rhymney, L'Avenir, Grootekerk and the new aircraft carrier HMAS Albatross which was first commissioned in 1929. The photographs include some interesting images of farming and transportation on the far west coast of South Australia, and show glimpses of the lives of Aboriginal people at that time, at Poonindie Mission, Koonibba Mission, Fowler's Bay and Ceduna region. The photographs in this collection were taken by E. F. Derbyshire during the years 1929-1933, when he was a commercial traveller for Clarkson Limited of Adelaide, suppliers of builders' tools and hardware. McColl family photograph album and scrapbook

An album and scrapbook initially kept by Jane McColl, daughter of James Ramsay McColl, showing the family and family home 'Largs Villa' at Woodville, her father and his employees in the marine plumbing business at Port Adelaide, and her brothers and cousins, some of whom found work on coastal steamers around Australia, including ports in Queensland, Sydney, Albany and Wyndham in Western Australia. The album was lent for copying and the State Library does not hold the original.

'Glenpark' steel ship

Figurehead, 'Glenpark' steel ship [3 mast full rigged ship. ON102575. What is known as baldheaded ship. Built 1897 by A Roger and Co. Glasgow. 265.0 x 40.0 x 23.0. 1799 tons. Under Captain Hugh Griffiths. Arrived Port Adelaide November 30th 1900. Ballast from Cape Town. Sent to Port Pirie to load wheat. Arrived Port Pirie December 6th. There for 7 weeks. Loaded 28,846 bags wheat for Guam. Sailed January 29th after some crew trouble. Cook and two seamen taken back to Port Pirie from near Port Germein. Apparently very slow trip down gulf as she stranded on NNE rock off Wedge Island at about 4.00am February 1st 1901. All crew rescued by barque 'Elda' and taken to Port Victoria. Ketch 'Mary Webster' picked up two casks and a hen coop. Mr Tapley of Wedge Island picked up a lifebuoy with the name 'Glenpark' on it and several spars. Sister ship named 'Kyance'. Went aground 1910. Mr TN Stephens, Collector of Customs, Port Adelaide received telegram from Harbour Master at Port Victoria advising of wreck. Captain Griffiths formerly in command of ship 'Bianca' also wrecked. Ship 'Wynford' grounded on same day as 'Glenpark' near Port Germein (on sand) towed off. Information supplied by AD Edwardes from Advertiser 1904. He never managed to obtain a photograph or picture of the ship]

Small photograph album with brass clasp with carte de visite photographs of Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh and members of his party who visited South Australia in 1867 on the 'Galatea', made up by Caroline Louisa Turton, daughter of Sir Dominick Daly. Inside the album is written in pencil: 'Mother's book of Naval friends when in S. Australia, officers of the Galatea &c - Prince Alfred, Queen Victoria's son who visited Adelaide in HMS 'Galatea' in Nov 1867'. A few photographs relate to the visit of H.M.S. 'Falcon' and H.M.S. 'Curacoa in 1865. Some are photographs of wives of officers, and a few are of Turton relatives in the Royal Navy. Some photographs had been placed between pairs of photographs and have been numbered with an 'A' and now housed separately. See MORE INFO 'Contents' for details.

Photograph 154 of the Port Adelaide Gasworks after completion in 1866 is shown in the SAGASCO 1986 history (page 1) as part of the Bowden site buildings ca.1895. This is a copy made for SAGASCO ca.1986 from B 21542 (date given as ca.1900).

A collection of 350 location scouting photographs for 'Sebastian and the Sparrow' showing locations in South Australia including: Port Adelaide, West Lakes, Scotch College Adelaide, Two Wells, Cheltenham Cemetery, Holden Motors Woodville Plant, and Dublin. Also includes colour proof sheets of location photographs, production stills, proof sheets of production photographs with mark-up notes, and test prop photographs. Included are 236 colour prints (duplicates of negatives).

Selection of photographs by Charles Radcliffe, taken from an album, and including views of Port Adelaide, Heathpool and Norwood areas, as well as flower studies and children. His wife Emily (referred to as 'Mother') and their children Constance, Douglas and Phyllis are the subjects of some of the photographs. Housed in the box with the album is a postcard of the new Government House in Suva, Fiji (no. 69) and an English country house (no. 70), both in mounts. The composite ship 'Torrens', 1276 tons, undergoing repairs on Fletcher's Slip, Port Adelaide. She returned to England, with a straight stem, where a new bow was fitted. The composite ship 'Torrens', 1276 tons, at Port Adelaide [composite ship, 1335 gross tons, 1276 net tons. ON73595. 222.1 x 38.1 x 21.5. Built 1875 (10) J Laing, Sunderland. Owners: AL Elder and others, registered London (the others included her long time master, Captain SH Angel, not the one associated with 'Beltana'). Sold 1903 to Italian owners, and broken up in 1910. With the exception of the 'Loch' ships the last sailing ship to regularly carry passengers in the Australian-England trade. A very lengthy and comprehensive item in 'Colonial Clippers' gives an outline history. See pages 132 onwards. The damage caused by an iceberg, shown in some of the illustrations demonstrates the immense strength of the vessel. There are innumerable references to this vessel in books, newspaper cuttings etc. as she was a favourite passenger ship with a long career. Latter day writers frequently have called her 'The Wonderful Torrens'].

A miscellaneous collection of mounted photographs relating to exploration of South Australia and the Northern Territory, including several unidentified outback stations, a group portrait of Aboriginal people of Port Lincoln ca. 1900, and maritime topics. A selection have been digitised. Photographs 3, 5-7 are albumen prints of etchings by Frederick Nixon, 1845 duplicating copies held elsewhere in the Pictorial Collection. A photograph of the 'Lusitania, Circular Quay, Sydney, NSW', Excelsior Photo Company' and an interesting series of nineteenth century photos of Tarputree Hindu temples, India with views of Gopuram, Mundapum with lion figures, and a stone car or chariot drawn by horses, are included.

South Australian views

An album of South Australian views of Flinders Ranges, Kangaroo Island, Port Pirie, Port Augusta and one of Darwin. Photographers are not all known - although some are attributed elsewhere to Walter Howchin, and, according to a researcher, numbers 1-24 are by H.R. Perry. Many are duplicated elsewhere in the collection but these for the most part are better quality images. Captions are as they appear in the album.

Kaines Collection

Collection of 15 photograph albums, containing 2943 photographs taken by Jack Kaines from the time he finised school until the end of World War II. The photographs act as a pictorial documentary of his life showing the places he traveled to around South Australia and Australia, including many roadtrips and daytrips visiting friends and family. Many of the photographs show the various cars that he owned. The photographs taken during World War II initially show many other Servicemen, but subsequently become mostly tourist shots. Except for a small number of photographs taken in Fiji, the collection ends with his war photographs, and the last 30 years of his life is not captured in this collection. A selection of photographs from his albums have been digitised and can be searched on PRG 1638.
