Edward Allan Farquhar

Edward Allan Farquhar. Born Le Fevre's Peninsular 4 November 1871 and educated at Mr. S. MacPherson's School, Exeter, and Prince Alfred College. Married Mabel Cranwell in 1896. Began his career working for Crooks and Brooker in 1885. President of the Marine Board until the establishment of the Harbors Board in 1914, when he was appointed Commissioner of the Harbors Board becoming Chairman on the resignation of his predecessor, Arthur Searcy, in 1924. Served as a Councillor, Alderman and Chair of Finance on the Port Adelaide City Council. He died on 3 April 1935.

Diary of Thomas Plummer Addison on his voyage from Plymouth to Adelaide on the 'Pestonjee Bomanjee', 1838.

Small octavo size diary with 80 pages written in ink and pencil, in a notebook 'The New Commercial Memorandum Book', which includes printed commercial information on the first eight pages. Nine pages at the end of the notebook contain details of minor personal transactions and other miscellaneous notes. The diary is written on blank pages and begins on Wednesday 6 June 1838, and records the details of the ship voyage of Thomas Plummer Addison and his wife, early South Australian pioneers, from Plymouth, England, to Adelaide, South Australia, on board the ship 'Pestonjee Bomanjee'. Addison records his contact with Governor of South Australia, Lieutenant-Colonel George Gawler, who was also aboard the ship, along with events and daily life aboard the ship during the voyage including: the birth of his daughter; weddings and funerals on board; conditions aboard the ship including problems with food and rats; the ten day break in the voyage at Rio de Janeiro; crossing the equator ceremony involving a messenger from Neptune; and the arrival at Holdfast Bay on the morning of 12 October 1838. Diary written by J.H. Clark during a voyage from Plymouth, England to Port Adelaide, South Australia on board the barque "Fatima", captained by J.G. Ray, Commander. Ship embarked 6 February, set sail 13th February and dropped anchor 11 June 1850. Diary contains a hand drawn chart of the voyage route, pencil sketches, a flower sample, and longitude and latitude notes.

[General description] This is a new 500 class Mountain type locomotive. It was part of an order of thirty locomotives placed by South Australian Railways (S.A.R.) with Armstrong Whitworth in Great Britain in 1924, which arrived in two shipments in 1926. These massive locomotives were unloaded at Port Adelaide and taken off the pier by horse teams. The 500 class was rated to haul 400 tons over the Mount Lofty ranges and was the most powerful locomotive in Australia at the time. [On back of photograph] 'Mountain type of locomotive'.

'Eureka' Steam Motor

The 'Eureka' Steam Motor purchased second-hand from Port Adelaide and Queenstown Tramway Company in April 1883, and run by the Glenelg Railway Co. Ltd. Used on South Terrace Line between South Terrace and Goodwood. Built by Merryweather, London. Engine 0-4-0 type inside cylinders 5 inch diameter with Stephenson's motion. Held about 80 passengers. The vehicle has 'Eureka' painted on the side of the front single deck engine car while the second part has two decks.
