A researcher believes that Captain George Falconer from Aberdeen, Scotland, was the Captain the year that the 'Xantippe' went missing. The 'Daily Commercial News and Shipping List' (Sydney, Friday 8 February 1895) reports that: 'Captain Falconer, of tho British barquentine Xantippe, from Victoria. B.C. for Cork, which put into Skibbereen Harbor, November 28th, with the crew sick, has since died.' The researcher, a descendant of Captain Falconer, says: 'He snd his crew were caught in the Doldrums. Most succumbed to scurvy. Some were rescued and recovered to Skibbereen in Eire.'

Remained in New Zealand trade until sold in 1899. Made a famous run of about 14 days in company with and sometimes outdistancing the same owner's steamer Ruapehu in the southern Indian Ocean.]
