Murray, Rene (nee Spurling), Mervyn and Cecil Crowell. Photograph was taken in Kadina on 22nd November 1943 when Murray was awarded a bravery medal by South Australian Governor Sir Chas. Barclay-Harvey for saving a man from drowning. The Crowell family lived at Price on Yorke Peninsula.

Bow and side view of screw steamer 'Merle' cruising with passengers at Blanchetown, after conversion to a motor vessel for tourist trips between Murray Bridge to Blanchetown and downstream to the Lakes. It sank after a fire and lies just south of the railway bridge at Murray Bridge. There was also a Paddle Steamer 'Merle', which sank during a storm in 1917. It was built in Morgan in 1904 by Edward Dienier and named after one of his daughters. It pulled the barges Eva Millicent and Flo D until it sank during a storm in Lake Alexandrina in 1917, the crew and passengers taking refuge on the barge Flo until help arrived [See B 26224 for a better quality image].

Captain Hugh King, Senior

Captain Hugh King, Senior, pioneer river trader, owner of 'Gem' 'Ellen', 'Ruby', 'Corowa', 'Princess Royal' and 'Mannum'. From 1867 his home was at Milang, South Australia and in 1878, he moved to Morgan. He traded on the Darling River until 1888, and then brought trade down to the river settlements on the Murray River in South Australia.
