General notes

Caption on photoprint identifies this as 'the first Ruby', however Ronald Parsons in 'Ships of the inland rivers', lists the earliest vessel of this name used on the rivers, as a wooden schooner converted to a twin screw steamship, official number 31693, built in 1853 and sold to owners in New Zealand in 1861. Gwenda Painter in 'The River Trade' also used the caption 'The first Ruby', which would date this photograph circa 1860.

Historical information

Registered at Sydney, 1877, Port Adelaide, 1884, official number 74898. Built at Moama, 1876, by G.B. Ayr. (Godson number 65A/17). According to researcher Leith Hall, this vessel is the Ruby built in 1876 by G. Air at Moama, NSW. She is labelled as the first Ruby because she was the first Murray River Paddle Steamer of that name. There were two later vessels of that name, the last of which is in existence and has been restored. Ronald Parsons lists the Ruby as being built in 1853. This particular vessel was apparently never a Paddle Steamer and was probably never used on the Murray, though she may have worked on the lower lakes at some stage. Please note that Parsons Books list Screw/Auxilary Vessels, Launches and Barges as well as Paddle Steamers, and that many of the names were used many times over.
