Settler's House

Settler's shanty at Kingston, River Murray. This settlement had the advantage of pre-existing buildings from the Thurk sheep station. The Chairman was J Weatherall and D Holberton was the secretary. There were 21 married members and the population totalled 100. The settlement suffered from insufficient finance. The settlements were established by the South Australian government to mitigate the effects of the depression which affected the colony. Thirteen settlements were surveyed along the River Murray. Pulteney Malcolm Murray

Pulteney Malcolm Murray, the son of John Murray and Ester Cowan, born 1819 Langholm, Scotland. He arrived in South Australia on the 'Lady Lilford' in 1839. He married Mary Scott in 1846, they had four children before Mary died on 11/11/1856, aged 38. On 10/2/1857 he married Elizabeth Vigar in the Union Chapel, Truro. They had eight children between 1857 and 1875. He died on 10/11/1879 at his residence Glen Turret near Truro.

Post Office at Kingston, River Murray. This town on the south bank of the Murray River was named after Charles Kingston who was Premier of South Australia. The town was surveyed in 1915 and originally called Thurk but the name was change to Kingston on Murray in 1940. The photograph shows a group of three men and two ladies standing outside the Post Office which is housed in a tiny tin shed. A sign attached to the building says it also houses the business of CJ Holme steamer agent

Murray Bridge, general view. The first road bridge across the lower Murray was known as the Murray Bridge and completed at Edward's Crossing in 1879. The bridge also became a shared road and rail bridge in 1886 until the separate rail bridge was completed in 1925.
