Barge "Ukee"
Barge "Ukee" carrying 1700 bales of wool. Reputed to be the biggest load of wool ever taken into Echuca in one haul. This barge carried wool and wheat along the River Murray, sometimes 250 tonnes at a time. She was the sixth largest barge to operate in the Murray-Darling river system. She was built at Morgan


'Merle', Screw Steamer
Screw steamer 'Merle', on a sightseeing trip on the River Murray at Blanchetown, after conversion to a motor vessel for tourist trips between Murray Bridge to Blanchetown and downstream to the Lakes. It sank after a fire and lies just south of the railway bridge at Murray Bridge. There was also a Paddle Steamer 'Merle', which sank during a storm in 1917. It was built in Morgan in 1904 by Edward Dienier and named after one of his daughters. It pulled the barges Eva Millicent and Flo D until it sank during a storm in Lake Alexandrina in 1917, the crew and passengers taking refuge on the barge Flo until help arrived [see PRG 1258/1/2675 for another copy of this image].

PS 'Industry' passing through a lock

Pumping water from the Murray
GENERAL: A settler, unable to afford to run his car for transport or to buy new tyres, uses the engine to pump water up to his home from the Murray River. Registration number 66-787 was B.E.A. Hay of Paringa for this Overland car which was a 1916 model.

Murray River fish boat
A small paddle steamer, identified as a 'Murray River fish boat' (probably P.S. 'Victoria') on a wide stretch of river. According to a researcher, P.S. Victoria was used as a fishing steamer in the Karadoc area. There is a fish punt on the starboard forward quarter, where the fish that were caught were kept alive until it was time to send them off to market. P.S. Victoria lays as a hulk in the Murray River, just up from the Cahffey bridge, and can be seen when the weir at Mildura is removed during a low river.
