Freemason's Tavern, Pirie Street, south side. The far side of the hotel is 64 yards east of Gawler Place. The frontage is 15 yards. The hotel existed since 1841 and at the time of this photograph the proprietor was Mrs L Murray. The hotel was known as the Freemansons Hotel from 1886. The owner appears to be WA Jones who, according to a banner on the hotel, was late of the Freemasons Tavern at Wilmington and Quorn.

[General description] This panoramic photograph with Flinders Street as its main focus shows the rooftops of city buildings receding into the distant suburbs and Adelaide Hills. Murray Aunger's motor business premises can be seen on the left. (With Harry Dutton he drove from Adelaide to Darwin in 1908.) Next to it is the Flinders Street Presbyterian Church. The plume of smoke is from the Adelaide Power Station. Post Office, King William Street, west side of Post Office is 50 yards north of Franklin Street. Work on the General Post Office began in 1867 when Prince Alfred laid the foundation stone at the base of the Victoria Tower. This part was completed in 1872. The then single storey building was built of Murray Bridge freestone and was designed by Wright and Woods. In this photograph the tower appears shorter.

Thomas Playford

Thomas Playford

No.1061 Lieutenant Thomas Playford was born at Norton Summit on 5 July 1896, the grandson of South Australian Premier, Thomas Playford 1837-1915. Thomas was working for his father as a gardener at the time of his attestation in May 1915 and being under age required his father's permission to enlist. A member of the 27th Battalion he served in France and was wounded in action on 5 November 1916, receiving a "severe" gun shot wound to the abdomen. He returned to duty in 1917 and was promoted to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in January 1919 and Lieutenant in April 1919 before returning to Australia aboard the Ypiranga in July 1919. In 1933 Playford was elected the Liberal and Country League Member for Murray and entered the South Australian House of Assembly. He was elected leader of the party and Premier in November 1938. He was to be Premier for 26 years and 266 days; the longest serving South Australian Premier.

James Olson, service number 562, enlisted on December 9th 1914 and embarked with 'C' Squadron, 11th Light Horse Regiment on June 2nd 1915. He was transferred to the 4th Light Horse Machine Gun Squadron in March 1917 under Captain Bryant. He was discharged on October 22nd 1919 and died February 22nd 1968 in Murray Bridge.
