The 'Kookaburra' paddle steamer

The 'Kookaburra', a stern wheel paddle steamer constructed about 1918 when the 'Merle' was cut in half and extended. River trader Edward Diener and family used it as a home and store; after his death in 1923 his daughter and son ran it for a further two years before leaving the river. [Frank Tucker advises that it was the barge 'Flo', tender to the 'Merle' SWPS, that was cut in half, extended and built up into the Kookaburra.]

COORONG: A fishing holiday for Dr. R.H. Hamilton & R.D. Marsden on the Coorong side of the Murray Mouth; a sailing dinghy "Escape" is moored by a beach with a large catch of mulloway recorded as "6 tons one day, 4 tons the next" covered with wet netting to keep the sun off.

Cliff fall at Bow Hill on 4 November 1955 on the Morton property. 60,000 tons of rock fell from the cliff face into the River Murray. (An article and photograph appeared in the Advertiser on 5 November 1955.).

Gordon Morton, Lyall Johnston and Clem Koch in the engine room on the Morton property beside the River Murray at Bow Hill after a cliff fall. 60,000 tons of rock fell from the cliff face into the river on 4 Novenmber 1955. (See the Advertiser 5 November 1955 for article and photograph.).

McKeevor, Francis Malcolm Blair, Coghill, Stanley Price Weir (later 10th Battalion AIF), John James Hughes (later 32nd Battalion, AIF), Leonard Watkins Bickle and Oldham. Major Edward Castle Oldham (who died at Lone Pine on 25 April 1915) is third from the right in the front row. It would appear that this photo is roughly contemporary with the group in PRG 280/1/26/289.

WILLASTON: Workers at Eyres' lime kiln, l-r: Walter Henbest; Tom Leske; Alphonsus Carmody. The Lime kiln was at the corner of Redbanks Road and Princess Street, Willaston. Alphonsus Carmody lived at the corner of Main North Road and Murray Road, Willaston. He later lived at 8 Edward Street Willaston. The Gawler Council established the children's playground on the site ca.1946 and it is part of the original land division called Waltham.

NILDOTTIE: Supply steamboat 'The Nellie' at Herrmann's Landing; she transported groceries and mail up river from Murray Bridge and on the return trip pick up produce from farmers including eggs, cream, grain and wool.
