John Crozier
John Crozier M.P was a founding member of the South Australian Jockey Club. He arrived in the colony from New South Wales after he drove his bullock teams loaded with his own wool. He was a station owner along the Murray before settling into his residence called Oaklands near Brighton. He grew wine on his estate and bred horses. He was a 'good colonist'.


John Medway Day
John Medway Day - Register staff member. The Register was originally known as the South Australian Gazette and Colonial Register and later the South Australian Register was South Australia's first newspaper. It was first published in London in June 1936 and moved to Adelaide in 1837. John Medway Day served at Mount Gambier Baptist Church and later at Kapunda. He left his ministry and became lead writer for the Register. While acting editor in 1883-1884 he had extreme views on land nationalization and championed the village settlements on the Murray. He left the Register in 1892.


John Henry Osborn Eaton
John Henry Osborn Eaton, 1869-1948, engineer and public servant. Born at Goolwa, educated at Whinham College in North Adelaide and joined SA Water Conservation Department in 1884. He was Engineer in Chief from 1929-35 and the South Australian representative on Murray River Commission from 1919-1946. He also was Member of the Council of the Institute of Engineers of Australia from 1924-27.

John Hannah Gordon
The Honourable John Hannah Gordon, M.L.C., K.C, Politician and Judge. He was admitted to the Bar in 1876. Remembered as Barrister, Federationist, Judge, Local Government Councillor and Head, Member of Upper House, Solicitor, Queen's Counsel. He led and won the case for equal rights to access River Murray water. He was knighted in 1908.


George Woodroffe Goyder
George Woodroffe Goyder joined the South Australian Department of Lands, eventually becoming surveyor-general. He laid down on a map the line of demarcation between that portion of the country where rainfall has extended, and that where drought prevails. The map published in 1866 showed his rainfall line of travel with a wing sweeping east from the Murray to the Victorian border and another from Spencer Gulf far to the west. This line separated lands suitable for agriculture and lands suitable for grazing. Later he surveyed the Northern Territory for a site for the capital. He was known as the most efficient public servant in the colony


Robert Grundy

He died suddenly aged 84 on May 19,1919 aboard the Tolarno, the steamer with which he was associated for a long time. Sir John William Jeffcott
Sir John William Jeffcott, first Judge in the Supreme Court fof South Australia. He was appointed by His Majesty's Order in Council on 13th July 1836. He was drowned at the Murray Mouth on the 12th December 1837.


George Bain Johnston
Captain George Bain Johnston was born in Scotland and sailed out to Melbourne in 1853. Later he joined the gold rush at Forest Creek. He moved to Goolwa and in 1857 purchased land in Little Scotland, Goolwa. He built Cockenzie House. He was regarded as one of the Murray's most successful navigators, a loyal, intelligent and enterprising colonist.

E.C. Longson
E.C. Longson, Sharebroker, was remembered fondly at the Adelaide Stock Exchange. He gave away a fortune. He was born in Lancashire in 1831 and was a solicitor but left the law to join a mercantile firm. He arrived in Melbourne in 1852 and honeymooned in Adelaide. He was a buyer and salesman to Messrs. William Younghusband in Gilbert Place. He became a sheep farming agent, and Staff Clerk to the SA Volunteer Military Force. He was known as 'the Prince of Brokers' and was a brilliant electioneering agent for candidates wishing to enter parliament. He helped Sir Thomas Elder, Sir Richard Baker, Sir Edwin T Smith, Hons. Henry Scott, John Crozier and AB Murray. "If you want to get into Parliament you only have to employ Mr Longson" quoted Sir Richard Baker.


Ernest Alfred Loveday
Ernest Alfred Loveday born 1868 and died 1915. This photograph was taken about 1911. He was a surveyor and superintending surveyor of the Murray Irrigation Settlement. He was son of Corporal Richard John Loveday and laid out the township of Berri. The Loveday Settlement was named after him. The Loveday Memorial was unveiled at Cobdogla in appreciation of his work in 1930.


Mr Allan McFarlane
Mr Allan McFarlane (senior). According to a researcher, Allan McFarlane was born in Scotland in 1792 and died in Adelaide on 11 March 1864. He was married in Wick, Scotland to Margaret Horne in 1816. They produced 4 sons and 7 daughters. He was a parliamentarian, race horse breeder and pastoralist in the Murray and Mount Barker districts of South Australia. He bought Wellington Lodge Station and Glensloy near Mount Barker Junction.


James Henry McNamara
James Henry McNamara son of David McNamara (born 13 July 1871 in Adelaide): Surveyor General from 1930-1937. He died in 1952 aged 81. He was the last of the old Government Surveyors, a band who for many years spent their lives opening up new country for developemnt and settlement. He performed surveys in the Murray Mallee districts and on Eyre Peninsula. He inspected stock routes from Marree to Birdsville and the Northern Territory routes from Charlotte Waters.


Matthew Moorhouse
Matthew Moorhouse [duplicate copy at PRG 458/1/2/11]. He was an English pioneer in Australia and Protector of Aborigines, pastoralist and politician in South Australia. He published "A Vocabulary and Outline of the Grammatical Structure of the Murray River Language" in 1846. He returned to England to promote migration. He was a member of the South Australian House of Assembly for the City of Adelaide. He became a pastoralist and lived on his station "Bartagunyah" near Melrose.


Sir William Morgan
[General description] Head and shoulders portrait of Sir William Morgan. He is wearing 'mutton chop' whiskers and a moustache, with no beard. Arriving in Adelaide in the 'Glenelg' in 1849 he first worked on land near the River Murray. Later, after a successful stint in the Victorian goldfields, he returned to Adelaide where he became a successful businessman and merchant, then went into politics. He was a strong advocate for the Federation of Australian States. He bought 'Netherby' in 1867, and died in 1883 [On back of photograph] 'Sir William Morgan'.


Archibald Henry Peake
[General description] Head and shoulders portrait of Archibald Henry Peake, seen in three quarter view, showing a robust middle aged man, greying at the temples and wearing a thick moustache. He is wearing a flower in his buttonhole. He was Liberal Premier of South Australia between June 1909 and April 1920. Remembered as one of South Australia's most able Premiers, his greatest achievement was the locking of the Murray River in co-operation with New South Wales, Victorian and the Federal Government. He also heavily influenced the division of the state's politics into a two Party system.
