Address presented to Governor Robinson
An address presented to the Governor, Sir William Cleaver Francis Robinson on his first visit to Mount Gambier, by the members of the Mount Gambier Agricultural and Horticultural Society. Signed by the President, Charles Clark, and the Secretary, M.C. Wilson, it was presented during the Governor's visit to the Mount Gambier Show. See 'The Express and Telegraph' (Adelaide), 30 March 1883, page 3, for a report on the visit.

Mitchell's Hotel. The Assembly Room is situated next door, then A. Mitchell's Grocery Store which is next door to J. Heinemann's Saddlers Shop. Adjoining this building is a small cottage. This is the former site of Jen's Hotel.First Mt. Gambier Hotel was built on same site by 'Black' John Byng an American Negro in 1840, later A. Mitchell, John Allen then J.M. Miss N. Brooksby
Photograph of Miss Netta Brooksby (later Fogarty) taken before the Debutante Ball for Mount Gambier High School in June 1941. Netta was born in Mt Gambier at St. Neots Hospital, on 15th August, 1923.

Post Office - Telegraph
Photograph of telegraphy instruments mounted on a wooden board possibly in a museum. The inscription says "These telegraph instruments were used to transmit from Kalangadoo on 3rd March 1962. The last telegram to be sent by morse code from a South Australian Post Office thus ending an era of morse telegraphy in the Post Office in South Australia which began on 18th February 1856."

Mayor Archibald Llewellyn (Arch) Sealey. Born Mt. Gambier 19 May 1914, Married Lorna Bodey 14 March 1936, Mayor 1971-1983, Died 16 November 1984. Woman standing in the background is possibly Mrs Alex Roberts. Hector Fraser is giving the 'Ode to the Haggis'.

Sports Carnival
Photograph of the South East Footballers sash and cup being awarded to the captain of the winning team during the Sports Carnival in March 1965, Mount Gambier. The person holding the winner's cup is David Thompson, a well known runner, footballer and official of West Gambier Football Club. He was buried 10th November 2008.


Racing Trophies

A researcher has added that 'the man on the left is Robert Kirby of Mingbool Station. He was a racehorse breeder and active member of the Mt Gambier Racing Club. The man on the right may be then mayor, Stan Elliott.'

Monsignor Isodore Redden
Photograph of Monsignor Richard Michael Isodore Redden, taken in the studio in Mount Gambier in 1956. He was a Catholic priest who became Monsignor in the church and was Dean of Mt. Gambier from 1952 to 1967. He born 1 February 1901 and died in the 1980's.

Army 3rd Light Horse Camp

Old building on left is on the site of the present Jens Hotel, first two storey building on right used to be Cornelius Boarding House and tea rooms. Long since removed by A Ruberkonic as a coffee palace. Now owned by Mrs Jens and used as part of her hotel across the road. The second two storey building on the right is the Mount Gambier Hotel, at the corner of Commercial Street and Penola Road. Scaffolding on left used for erection of the Town Hall clock tower. Nyook Station Homestead
Original homestead of Nyook Station, near Mount Gambier. From 1844 a number of stations were taken up in the Mount Gambier district. After July 1851 the pastoral licenses issued were regulated by the classification of the land. Nyook is the Scottish pronounciation of the English word Nook as in inglenook or a triangular area of land which sticks out into the North Sea (East Neuk of Fife) The photograph shows a small stone building covered by creepers and trees. A small chicken coop stands near the door along with various tools


Commercial St., Mount Gambier
Commercial St., Mount Gambier looking west. The South Australian Hotel is on the left foreground. This hotel existed since 1860 and was the third hotel to be built in Mount Gambier. The proprietor at the time of this photograph was Jane Long, widow of previous proprietor Robert Long. The hotel was enlarged in 1861


Residence, Mount Gambier
Home of Mr. & Mrs. Studemann, Commercial Street East, Mount Gambier. Amelia Louisa Rgina Studemann died in Mount Gambier in 1932. The is possibly her house in the photograph festooned with "Welcome Home" banners and bunting to greet the returning troops from World War I


Mount Gambier Station
Mr. David Power's Mount Gambier Station in 1860. It was called Mount Gambier Station under Mr Powers from 1851-1859. It later sold to Fisher and Rochford who sold it to Dr Browne in 1862 and then it was renamed Moorak Station. In 1911 Moorak was highly regarded for its fertile soil which raised stud sheep that were sold at the annual Moorak Sales. Moorak lay under the shadow of hills and welcomed hunters, once with 5,000 kangaroos being yarded and massacred. Other owners of Moorak were Mr Mitchell, Messrs. WJ and JH Browne (both doctors) Originally Moorak held 35,000 acres


Mount Gambier Station
David Power's Mount Gambier Station. David Power owned Moorak (Mount Gambier Station) and died in 1884. David Power took over the lease of Moorak from the original owner George Glen
