He was discharged in December 1945 with the rank of Warrant Officer, his last post being at 1 Tactical Air Force Telecommunications Unit. R.G. Clayton was born in Mount Gambier on 31 October 1921, enlisted in 1940 and was discharged from the Airforce in June 1945 with the rank of Flying Officer with 34 Squadron.

According to a researcher, Elders, at this particular time, were situated in part of The Mount Gambier Hotel at the Main Corner of Commercial Street West and Penola Road. This part of the Hotel faced directly onto Commercial Street.
