Historical information

Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM) James McIntosh McGillivray (MacGillivray), 5th South Australia contingent, was one of six Mount Gambier Members of the South Australian Contingent which went to England in 1897. RSM McGillivray died while serving in South Africa during the Boer War at Vankollensfontein on 21 July 1901. [Source: Australian War Memorial] The Mount Gambier National Trust Museum chose 21 July 2001 to l hold a Memorial Service for the Boer War casualties - exactly 100 years since the death of one of the men, Regimental Sergeant Major James MacGillivray. About fifty relatives of MacGillivray were present.
