South Australia [cartographic material] / drawn and engraved by J. Archer

Map of portion of South Australia and eastern Australia with major place names. Lake Torrens represented incorrectly as a horseshoe shape, therefore this map was drawn prior to exploration of that area. Text on map shows South Australia as having four churches, three clergy and a population of 16,071. (First official census of 26 February 1844 gives the population as 17,366.).

The map was drawn by A.J. Blakeway, Licensed Surveyor, from data furnished from memory by Oscar J. Herbert (son of Septimore Herbert, owner of 'Wissanger', Yankalilla, from 1842 to 1886). A hand drawn map showing the layout of the towns of Eden Valley, Springton, Taunton and Craneford, together with a table which sets out the allotments and buyers of those allotments when sold. The signature looks like J. Gottschalck. The Springton allotments were sold by C. Tiederman [sic], 28 October 1864; the Eden Valley allotments were sold by C. v. Bertouch,17 March 1866; the Taunton allotments were sold by R. Jenkins, 6 August 1863; and part of Craneford allotments were sold by C. v. Bertouch, 9 December 1865. A hand drawn scale map of Strzelecki Creek, showing its junction with Coopers Creek. Drawn on linen and sealed with wax. The map includes details of land elevation and floods marks which occurred previously in 1877, 1882, 1884 and 1892. The water level of Coopers Creek on 18 July 1894 is marked, giving a possible date for the creation of the map. Four waterholes are marked, three of which are labelled 'Burla [Burla]', 'Tourapi W.' and 'Little Tourap[i].' These appear to be variant spellings of locations later known as the Burlieburlie Waterhole and the Tooroopie and Little Tooroopie Waterholes.
