Sir Thomas Playford
Sir Thomas Playford, Premier of South Australia looking at a map. Information received from a researcher advises that 'it is a map showing the positions of oil exploration sites in Australia and it was located in his office. Once a month, I handlettered labels in white ink on dark blue board, cut them up with a sharp knife (before scalpels became available) and updated the maps in the offices of the Premier, The Minister and the Director. When gas and oil were discovered many years later, I was sworn to secrecy for six months while I worked on publications and displays that had to be ready for the public release of the discoveries. Unlike most of the other states, in SA everything was discovered by the State Government exploration team and then leased to private enterprise'.
