Photo was very likely taken during Lord Kintore's survey when he travelled from Darwin to Adelaide along the Overland Telegraph line, arriving in Alice Springs 8 May 1891.

Colonel Makin, son of John William Makin Esq of Albion Place, Salford, Lancashire is standing in a three quarter view and is wearing a heavily braided full dress uniform, which includes a cocked hat. He was associated with the first Volunteer Military Force, Adelaide Rifles, and Gawler Company. He was Hon. Aide-de-camp to Sir William Robertson and the Earl of Kintore. [General description] The avenue of elms on North Terrace runs parallel with the ivy covered wall of Government House. A large sign, partially obscured by trees (above the parked cars) advises that the National War Memorial is being erected by the Australian Government. Statue of Robert Burns when in front of the Art Gallery, North Terrace. The original site of the statue was on the west corner of Kintore Avenue and North Terrace. (unveiled May5, 1894) In 1930 the statue was removed to the site shown in this photograph. In February 1940 the statue was moved to a site on the North Terrace plantation between the Institute Building and the Public Library. Today it can be found in the forecourt of the State Library of South Australia building.

[General description] This stone building, with its Dutch gables and slate roof, was originally part of the Police Barracks and was granted to the Destitute Board in April 1851. Weeds growing in the gravel drive in front of the building give a desolate feel to the image.

Destitute Asylum

Destitute Asylum situated in Kintore Avenue was built of bluestone in 1877-78. Buildings were added over the years to accommodate the poor, infirm and orphans. Some of these buildings included a nursery, wash-house, stables and a morgue. The Destitute Asylum operated until 1926 providing financial assistance and temporary accommodation to the needy.

Destitute Asylum, showing the lean-to erected in 1935 for a garage and service station. By 1856 a quadrangle of buildings in Kintore Avenue off North Terrace known as the Destitute Asylum was providing indoor relief to many women, men and children in the new colony. Welfare provisions introduced at the turn of the centure reduced the demand for the home and it was finally closed in 1918.
