Some of these are taking advantage of the balconies and roof tops along North Terrace. A Union Jack flag flies from the tallest building.

This photograph shows the new layout as effected in 1930-31. Two rows of trees shade the lawn and a flowerbed runs the length of the wall surrounding Government House. The whole garden is fenced.

South Australian Institute

South Australian Institute

South Australian Institute, opened on January 29th 1861. Photograph shows the South Australian Library and the Mechanics Institute with the Police Barracks in the distance on the right. The building stands on the corner of North Terrace and Kintore Avenue and was designed by Edward Hamilton in an Italianate design complete with a portico. It opened in 1861 and was later thought of as the first university of the city.

Teachers Training College, Kintore Avenue, erected 1926-7. Opened March 1927. Frontage, including single storey portion on the right: 64 yards. Right side of the two storey part is 280 yards north of the south side of North Terrace.

[General description] Men, some holding guns, stand about in front of the Torrens Drill Hall with several parked cars. Buildings on Kintore Avenue can be seen in the background. The Drill Hall was demolished in 1935 and replaced with the building to be seen at B 6297. [General description] A large group of soldiers and civilians attend the ceremony at the new National War Memorial, Adelaide, on Anzac day, 1931. The police greys are in attendance (bottom left corner) and part of Government House can be glimpsed amongst the trees in the background. The Memorial was designed by Walter Bagot and Louis Laybourne-Smith (of the firm Woods Bagot) and built by Tillett and Son. The detail of the marble angel and group of bronze figures was the work of Sydney sculptor George Rayner Hoff.
