Promoting the 'Prehistoric Cabaret'

Promoting the 'Prehistoric Cabaret'

This photo was taken as part of the promotion of the Glenelg Christmas Pageant in December 1954. George Haig, the caveman, at that time was a member of the Glenelg Fire Brigade and the cavewoman was Lorna Maddern who was then the senior sales girl at Mackenzies's Shoe Store in Jetty Road. George naturally projected the perfect image of a caveman but to further enhance that image, before departing for the Pageant, he whipped out the plate bearing most of of his false front teeth and parked it on a ledge in the old shed where the dinosaur was built. The shed was originally part of a racing stable and for years after that was a chook house before becoming a workshop. Even the most fertile imagination could never have conceived of the awesome composition of the thick dust on that ledge. However, on returning from the Pageant, George, in true caveman style, casually picked up his teeth and popped them straight back into his mouth. Ugggg! George became so immersed in his role of a caveman that Lorna had to complain about his enthusiastic tugging of a fistful of her long hair, for the full length of Jetty Road, leaving her feeling half scalped by the end of the parade. The Apex Club of Glenelg's pet Tyrannosaurus, was originally created for the Apex 'Prehistoric Cabaret' held in the Glenelg Town Hall on 20 March 1953. He was affectionately called 'Claude' and featured in many Apex activities for years after the original event until storage of such a huge beast became impossible. When his den, just behind the National Bank on Jetty Road, was demolished he was sold to the Apex Club of Gawler where, after many more years of service to Apex, he was finally reluctantly cremated. Toastrack tram No.38

Toastrack tram No.38

Type B, electric cross-bench 'toastrack', tram No.38 of the Municipal Tramways Trust. According to a researcher the photograph was taken in Currie Street facing west, adjacent to the large archway entrance to the Adelaide Steamship Company's premises, about 100 metres west from King William Street. The tram is fitted with a destination number box on the roof, introduced on 27 May 1917, the glass above "Glenelg R'ly" (a very unusual destination sign as most cars just said "Railway") is painted black rather than soon afterwards replaced by a metal panel. A researcher has provided the following information: 'Electric trams never ran on the Glenelg Railway (and couldn't, since it had a different track gauge from the tramlines, and electric overhead wires were only installed on what became the Glenelg tram line in 1929). In 1917 all of Adelaide's trams were run by the Mynicipal Tramways Trust (MTT). The 'Glenelg R'l'y' sign referred to its destination - the railway service that departed for Glenelg, going south down King William Street from Victoria Square. The garland of eucalyptus cuttings may indicate the tram's decoration was for Wattle Day, 1st September.'

[Music Posters]

[Music Posters]

Posters created by Alex Innocenti for various productions. See below for details of items. The State Library holds a collection of music, video, photographs, records, CDs/DVDs and memorabilia and ephemera which is a representation of the music industry in the 1960s, 70s and 80s. An example includes this collection of posters which were designed by Alex Innocenti, the entrepreneur behind Cellar Blues Promotions. Alex continued to create the graphics for promotion materials over an almost 30 year period. The posters are a graphic depiction of a point in time, with images of the bands and artist, painted and hand drawn in the graphic style of the day, well before the capacity to produce such promotions on a computer desk top. Some of the bands he promoted included Black Sabbath, Doug Parkinson In Focus, Cat Stevens, Daddy Cool and Billy Thorpe. Alex was also the driving force behind Adelaide's "Woodstock", the 70s music festival held at Myponga. Posters for the festival are included in this collection.
