Frontage of the Oriental Hotel (including the three storey building) extends for 33 yards south of Rundle Street. Mrs Mary Clancey was the proprietor of the Oriental Hotel during this time.

[General description] The Oriental Hotel is a five storey building with a canilevered verandah above the ground floor and curved balconies with cast iron balustrading on the first and second floors. The shops at ground level are recently installed. [On back of photograph] 'Acre 82 / South eastern corner of Rundle Street and Gawler Place / Oriental Hotel / 23 June 1940 / This view show the shop fronts installed in 1939 / Compare with B 3426 / The Rundle Street frontage of the Oriental Hotel is 15 1/2 yards'.

Gawler Place, Adelaide, looking north towards the Rundle Street intersection. A newspaper boy carries a pile of papers on his head, and a group of fashionable young ladies is crossing the street. Cars are parked at the kerb and horses with their carts wait patiently. The extreme left of the picture is 31 yards north of Grenfell Street. Reproduced in the Chronicle, 15th December, 1923.

Simpson's tinware factory, Gawler Place, east side. Drawn by AM Simpson about 1860. Reproduced in a circular issued in 1929 by A Simpson and Son Ltd. on the occasion of the removal of the firm's premises to Pirie Street. Site is about 30 feet north of Grenfell Street.
