[General description] This six storey building was constructed as an investment for the Methodist Church and to house administrative offices for the Church and the Methodist Book Depot (later renamed the Epworth Book Depot). The style is Gothic with a strong ecclesiastical feel. The Simpson building was used to house the PMG (Postmaster General)/Telecom adult technician-in-training scheme, a training school which taught basic technical aspects of telecommunications and metalwork skills in classroom environments, from 1948 until the mid 1980s.

[General description] A harnessed horse feeds from his nosebag in front of the new State Bank building. This five storey building is of concrete construction with rendered dressings. [General description] This is a two storey building with shuttered windows and a portico with square pillars. A Norfolk Island pine tree looks to be outgrowing its position in front of the building. A large lantern hangs from an archway over the front gate where some gentlemen wearing top hats (bank managers?) are posing for the camera. The first branch of this bank was established in South Australia in 1850. Pirie Street, south side, January 12th 1959. Left side of the central three storey building (marked witrh a dot on the photograph) is 37.25 yards west of Gawler Place. Frontage of the building (from the dot to "x" on the photograph) is 40 yards. For a view of this building in 1910 see B 5381. The Salvation Army's People's Palace can be seen in the distance. Some of the businesses located in the buildings nearer to the camera include: Atkins Limited, The Town Hall branch of the E & S and A Bank Limited, William Brindal and Sons and Epworth Books in the Epworth Building at Number 33 Pirie Street. Epworth Building was built in 1927 as administrative offices for the Methodist Church and the Methodist Book Depot. This unique building was built in the federation gothic design with a seven storey "U" shaped structure and was named after the birthplace of John Weslei in Lincolnshire, England

Freeman Street, Congregational Chapel. Copied from Kingston's map of Adelaide, 1842. The first Congregational Chapel in South Australia was a temporary structure on North Terrace. George Strickland Kingston was the architect for a building in Freeman Street (now Gawler Place) with the congregation then moving to the Flinders Street site. The chapel was named in honour of the Reverend TQ Stow who conducted the first service in a tent on the Adelaide's Parklands in October 1837

The left side of the People's Palace (adjoining Army & Navy stores) is 13 yards east of Chesser Street. Eyes & Crowle's premises was demolished in 1923 and a new building erected. See B 1539.

An MGA Roadster turning right into Freeman Lane from Pirie Street. Parked on the south side in front of Frank McCabe gem merchants and Super Elliot sportstore are L-R, an AP5 Chrysler Valiant (1964), a Holden FC Special Station Wagon (1958-59), a Ford Falcon Sedan (1960-65) and a Ford Customline (c1955). The Fred Astaire Dance Studio can be seen on the south western corner of Gawler Place and Pirie Street. The banners on the newspaper kiosk include the 'Truth' referring to the Beaumont Children and the 'Advertiser' referring to the upcoming visit to Australia of US President Lyndon Johnson. The People's Palace and Adelaide Motors, Pirie Street, south side. Right side of the Freemason's Hotel is 64 yards east of Gawler Place. The People's Palace originally housed the German Club but from 1899 the Salvation Army occupied the premises until 1979. In 1938 a third storey was added, faithfully adhering to the building's design. The Freemason's Hotel existed from 1841 until 1978. It was rebuilt in 1880 and has also been known as Freemason's Tavern

[General description] Alterations and enlargements to the Peoples Palace include an extra storey and two balconies, the cost of this project being around twelve thousand pounds. The architect was Mr. H. T. Griggs and the builders were Messrs. Webber and Williams. Freemason's Tavern, Pirie Street, south side. The far side of the hotel is 64 yards east of Gawler Place. The frontage is 15 yards. The hotel existed since 1841 and at the time of this photograph the proprietor was Mrs L Murray. The hotel was known as the Freemansons Hotel from 1886. The owner appears to be WA Jones who, according to a banner on the hotel, was late of the Freemasons Tavern at Wilmington and Quorn.

AG Healing was an Australian manufacturing firm founded in 1896 by Alfred George Healing. They produced bicyles and after diversifying in 1956 they moved to manufacturing television sets, refrigerators and washing machines

In 1888 the YMCA began Our Boys Institute with activities that included Bible classes, sporting teams, lectures, debating, choral societies, gymnasium and camps

Flinders Street, Adelaide, north side, showing a classic Adelaide villa, the residence of Richard Verco. He was born at Callington in Cornwall, England, 12 July 1821, and arrived in South Australia aboard the ship 'Theresa' in 1847. A building contractor, Richard Verco erected some of the largest buildings in the city of Adelaide. The left side of the house is about 52 yards east of Gawler Place.
