Robert Davenport family album

Photograph album of the Davenport family of Battunga, near Macclesfield. Photographs include views of the homestead, property and cottages, family members at Christmas celebrations, picnics and other family occasions at Beaumont House, Port Elliot and North Adelaide. The album includes several photographs of Sir Samuel Davenport. Captions have been noted from handwritten sheets included in the album. Photographs 1-128 which relate to South Australia, have been digitised. The remaining photographs in the album are of travels overseas to Chungking, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

Drawings from the Frome expedition

Album of sketches done by James Henderson. Most were done when Henderson was a member of Captain Frome's expedition to the north in 1843, and these sketches complement the diary of James Henderson 'Exploration of N. interior of S. Australia'; the remaining drawings are of scenes around Adelaide, Inman Valley and Rapid Bay. The drawings are generally of a larger landscape but most have a point of interest in the form of kangaroos, emus, people, etc. The expedition drawings are for the most part done in the album; a few smaller ones have been done on paper and inserted into the album later. All the watercolours were done on paper and then added to the album.

Phineas Philip Davies memorial in the South Australian Naval Memorial Garden, Sir Edwin Smith Drive, Adelaide. The inscription reads, "Sacred to the memory of Phineas Philip Davies, A.B. H.M.C.S. Protector. Killed by premature explosion of a cartridge when firing salute at Glenelg Commemoration Day 29th December 1885. Aged 20. Erected by his shipmates and Naval Reserve." The memorial marked the grave of Davies in Cheltenham Cemetery for 100 years prior to being claimed by the Royal Australian Navy in December 1986. It was installed as the headpiece of the South Australian Naval Memorial Garden at H.M.A.S. Encounter until the Garden was relocated in April 1995.

Items 108-111 (loose in back of album) are prints from clasical scenes. Attribution for the photographs are as follows: images 1-50, 73 are by Sweet; images 77-79, and possibly 80 are by Charles Bayliss. Overseas scenes (images 81-111) have not been copied.

Interstate tourist attractions shown include Thunderbolt Rock (NSW) and an unusual tree stump carving relating to "Ponsasinorum" in Victoria. Colour postcard of the Mounted Police Barracks in Adelaide. Police are standing in the grounds in a square formation and include foot and mounted police and also a group of police with bicycles on the left. A large group of men and women [perhaps invited members of the public?] are in the middle of the formation. The image portrays a testimonial parade held at the South Australia Police Barracks, North Terrace to honour Detective William H. Northridge, who had pursued a "criminal lunatic" named George Brown, who had fired eleven .45 calibre revolver shots into the public, before Detective Northridge single-handedly arrested him in the River Torrens parklands [information provided by a researcher]. The postcard has a written message on the back. For further details see article 'Presentation to Detective Northridge' in the 'Herald', Saturday 31 March 1906, page 3.

Development of Adelaide 1839-1914: series of lantern slides.

Series of 102 black and white lantern slides numbered 40-145, illustrating the development of Adelaide, 1839-1914. Some slides are of maps, lithographs and sketches made by nineteenth century artists and lithographers. The series juxtaposes views of Adelaide buildings and streets and key landmarks at several time periods, to show the changes and developments in Adelaide to 1914. The streets in focus in this series include King William Street, North Terrace, Stephen's Place, Rundle Street, Hindley Street, Pulteney Street, Grenfell Street, Pirie Street, Gouger Street, Gawler Place and Hindmarsh Square. The following slides are not held: 1-39, 63, 67, 81, 128.

The other photographs in the album show Rundles, Hindley and Wakefield Streets, North Terrace and the Botanic Gardens. Inside the front cover is a small photographic portrait of a man, believed to be Duryea.

Photographs, mostly pocket-sized snapshots and cards, sent to W.H. Allison from family members and fellow soldiers during the war. Also photos sent by Allison to his family members. The images, mostly uncaptioned, include his sister, Florence Emma Elizabeth (b.1906); a crowd observing fire damage to the Wallaroo Town Hall; interior and exterior views of hospitals in France and England where Allison recovered from war injuries; hospital staff; bedridden soldiers, including Allison, with their embroidered samplers on display (PRG 1471/5/31-33); men with crutches and walking sticks exercising after a snowfall; Australian Hospital Ship, 'Karoola'; and Allison in uniform, with walking stick, after his return to Australia on the 'Karoola'.

'Leprena' immediately after launching with her builders, March 1922 [wooden 2 mast ketch. ON131506. 70 gross, 67 net tons. 75.0 x 22.5 x 6.8. Built 1912 Philip B Forbes, Lake Macquarie, NSW and registered at Port Adelaide in 1923, having formerly been owned in Melbourne. Lengthened and renamed 'Leprena' in May 1938 = 105 gross, 85 net tons. 92.8 x 22.8 x 6.6. Requisitioned by Commonwealth Government during WW2 but returned to commerical service in 1946. Ultimately became a fishing vessel and was destroyed by fire off Port Moorowie, SA Feb. 12, 1964.
