Historical information

'The "Stump" photographer Alfred came from Hobart where his father Mark had settled in about 1830. Alfred trained as a photographer under Bill(?) Beathe, who had an excellent reputation . He also worked for and with S. Wherrett, Bishop Osborne, Nicholas & Stump, and on his own as A.A. Stump. Alfred moved to Adelaide and set up in business. He married and with his wife Rosa had four children - Claude, Kennelm, Stanley and Rosalind. They lived ultimately at 1 Victoria Avenue, Unley Park, in a handsome house designed by the architect of Carrick Hill. ... Kennelm and Stanley both followed their father's career: Ken worked mainly in the UK ... Stanley remained [in Adelaide] living in the family home and changing the studio name to "Rembrandt Studios" in King William Street. He was very well known with an excellent reputation. ... a fire - either in the building or in the studio - destroyed virtually all records of his work. Ernest Stump was born in 1865 and died 1930. ... I surmise that Ernest was in Adelaide prior to his marriage and Alfred used the occasion to set imaginary scenes as he was wont to do. He would bring people in off the street and pay them something like 2/- to pose for him.' [Information provided by a granddaughter of Ernest Stump.]
