Summary

[General description] The remodelled premises of softgoods merchant R.S. Tanner are dwarfed by the Foy & Gibson building behind. The building, which has an Art Deco facade is named 'Spinner house' presumably after F.S. Walton, cotton spinners and manufacturers whose firm occupies part of the building. Cars are parked in Hindmarsh Square. [On back of photograph] 'Acre 87 / Hindmarsh Square, north side / April 8th 1939 / Buildings in centre erected in 1938 / compare with B 7181 / The left side of Tanner's (the single storey part) is 23 yards east of Pulteney Street / Frontage of the two storey building is 15.5 yards / Frontage of the single storey section adjoining is 10 yards' (Another hand) 'For view of R.S. Tanner in 1960 see B 14398'.
