[General description] This row of attached cottages probably dates from early twentieth century. They are of red brick and stucco with a Spanish Mission feel. The nearest cottage is named 'Riverton'. Campden, West Terrace

Campden, West Terrace, the town house of the late W.H. Gray who arrived in South Australia in February 1837. It is 38 yards south of Hindley Street and stood back about 8 yards from West Terrace. William Henry Gray purchased his allotment of land in Adelaide while still in London. He arrived in the colony in 1837 on board the 'John Renwick' and built rush roofed cottages on North Terrace which were thought to be the first in South Australia. After a harsh beginning he increased his land and grazing acres. He was prominent in civic life.

West End Brewery on the south side of Hindley Street 8 December 1925. Horse drawn drays stand outside the brewery. The Stock House and Bottling Department are in the forefront. [On back of photograph] Acres 65, 66, 67. Hindley Street, south side. West End Brewery, Dec. 8th, 1925. Brewery extends east to a point about five eighths of an inch from the left edge of photo. The Brewery premises actually include the high wall which appears to the left of the above point. This point is 30 yards east of Liverpool Street. [General description] The brick building on the right is newly altered and extended. On the ground floor arched windows have been bricked up, keeping their outline in the wall. A bicycle is propped at the kerb in the foreground. The two storey Phoenix hotel on the right (on the east corner of Clarendon Street) was established in 1850 and the licensee from 1850-52 was R. Hall. The Royal Oak and Miner's Arms Hotel can be seen on the left of the picture, with a partial view of the Clarendon Hotel further east. [General description] Hemmed in on two sides by the West End complex the small building with mullioned windows is in a state of disrepair, with some of the window panes missing. It has an arched door in its corner, perhaps was previously a shop. A sign in its window mentions the name A. Dunn. [General description] This row of stone terrace houses has street level verandahs whose posts are topped with decorative iron lace. The corner end of the terrace has a section which includes an upper floor balcony. A flatbed truck is parked at the kerb. [General description] A man and some children pose for the photographer outside this dilapidated building, probably once the premises of the Albion Hotel, which appears to be in the first stages of demolition. [On back of photograph] 'Acre 70 / Morphett Street, west side / 1910-19. / The far side of the City Produce Co.'s building is 57 yards south of Hindley Street. Near side of building * on the corner is 38.5 yards south of Hindley Street. *The Albion Hotel (see list of licences 1839-40) is said to have occupied this site.' (Another hand) 'Correct. A hard copy version of the photo has the inscription 'The building in the corner was one of the first hotels built in Adelaide and called the Albion Hotel. Kept by Jack Heed and old sport. [General description] The facade of this neo classical influenced red brick building features pilasters and rendered mouldings, and a decorative parapet. [General description] These city buildings are undergoing changes. The furniture factory which is being demolished is to replaced by a garage. The building on the corner is to be painted and renovated. [General description] This newly completed section of the Government Produce Department Building is two storey and built of brick with large panelled windows, arched on its upper floor. A large chimney is seen on the left. Galvanised iron buildings on the right are the premises for Willsmore Carrying Company and Thomas Kennedy's Wood and Coal Yard. [On back of photograph] 'Acre 71 / Light Square / Sep. 15, 1926 / The two storey portion of the Government Produce Depot was completed in 1926. It is situated on the north side of the square at the eastern corner. Frontage: 21 1/2 yards. Edwin, and later his wife Ethel ran a shoe shop at these premises until Ethel's death in 1958. [General description] West's Picture Theatre photographed from the opposite side of Hindley Street with the roadway in the foreground. The theatre has an impressive tower topped with a cupola. The shop with the awning (on the right) is D. Ellis, Confectioner. Site of West's Picture Theatre: Far side of tower is 2.5 yards west of the east side of Victoria Street. / Far side of Olympia Cafe is 9 1/2 yards west of the west side of Victoria Street.' According to a researcher, the spire/tower is the entrance to West's Olympia Theatre. It was demolished in 1938 to make way for the West's Theatre, which is now the ASO Grainger Studio.

Playing at this time are two 1939 films, Robert Taylor and Myrna Loy in 'Lucky Night' and Walter Pidgeon and Virginia Bruce in 'Society Lawyer'. The ramp over the doorstep probably means that goods are wheeled in and out of the building. [On back of photograph] 'Acre 75 / Hindley Street, October 11th 1927 / The building in the centre was occupied in 1847 by the Adelaide Mechanics' Institute at a rental of 20 pounds per annum, paid to Mr. Peacock, the owner of this 'new lecture room' (Another hand) ' Site of Peacock's building: Stands back 27.5 yards from Hindley Street and is approached by a lane running south from Hindley Street / The western side of the building is 45.5 yards west of Leigh Street'.
