[General description] Buildings on the east side of Bank Street which were later demolished in 1926. [On back of photograph] Photographed in 1926. Reproduced in the Advertiser, Jan. 14, 1926 (See duplicate view) Bank Street, east side. Acre 49. Right side of single storey structure on the far side of Hunt's is 42 yards north of Hindley St. Extreme left of photo is 63 yards north of Hindley Street. These buildings (but not the Eagle Hotel) were demolished in 1926. For photo. of the premises then erected see B 4111. Newspaper article that appeared in The Advertiser on January 14 1926, pg.16. The caption reads "Where Adam Lindsay Gordon stabled his horses...an old familiar landmark, now undergoing demolition. Erected in the 'roaring forties', these three small shops in Bank Street were the principal stables of old Adelaide, and were a popular meeting ground. Adam Lindsay Gordon stabled his horses here, and derived inspiration from chance meetings for many of his stirring poems. The old labor bureau on the right has been in uninterrupted use under the same name for 78 years. For photograph of similar angle see B22741. [General description] A group of people, probably staff and customers, pose in front of the Eagle Tavern, a single story building with its name painted on its parapet. The lamp post on the corner bears a sign marked 'Walk round corners' for the benefit of horse riders and drivers. This hotel was built in 1846 with a rebuilding (by South Australian Brewing Company) around 1903. W.A. This Modernist building was to the design of architects Caradoc Ashton, Fisher, Woodhead and Beaumont-Smith. There are no windows on the narrow Hindley Street frontage or the western facade. The eastern Bank Street facade consists of a new type of double glazed windows, manufactured in Australia under licence from the USA. providing maximum light penetration and insulation against cold and heat. [General description] This view looks along Victoria Street towards North Terrace.Cartloads of workmens equipment stand outside the hotel which is undergoing alterations. The name 'Victoria Hotel' was transferred in 1840 from an earlier establishment on the opposite side of Hindley Street and the hotel is still in operation (under the name Princess Victoria) in 2012. Licensee at the time this photo was taken is C.L. Noonan. Note the large pillar box on the corner. [General description] This impressive Art Deco theatre was built by MGM in 1939, co-designed by American theatre designer Thomas W Lamb and Adelaide architect Frank Kenneth Milne. It had a seating capacity of 1,286. The movie playing at this time is 'Ninotchka' with Greta Garbo and Melvyn Douglas. 'Gone With the Wind' is a coming attraction. Next door to Brown's is the Castle Inn, of which a small portion can be seen on the right. Advertising for Clarion Cigarettes, Walkerville Ales, Gramp's Orlando Wines and West End Bitter Beer can be seen. A hoarding bears further advertisements. [General description] Clarendon House is a three storey Georgian style stone building with dormer windows on its top floor and a widow's walk, built by Robert and Mary Thomas, pioneers and proprietors of the Register newspaper. On the right is their home, Rhantregwynwen Cottage, named after Robert's birthplace in Wales. The group of people at the front door are probably the family. Amongst the people shown in the street are a gentleman on horseback, a man driving a bullock team and some Aborigines.
