Guinea Airways Ltd. Dakota DC-3 aircraft

Guinea Airways Ltd. Dakota DC-3 aircraft

DC-3 number 13624 assembled Oklahoma City in mid 1944 as a "Skytrain" for the U.S.A.A.F. After service in the Pacific, This C-47A-25-DK was purchased by Australian National Airways, and named "Moongana", registration VH-ANW, in late 1945. Moongana was transferred to South Australian based Guinea Airways and renamed "Bulolo". Bulolo served with Guinea as VH-GAK before Guinea Airways was taken over by Ansett-ANA and reverted back to VH-ANW for one year, before commencing just over ten and a half years of service with Ansett Airlines of South Australia, the new identity of Guinea Airways. Retired at age 27, VH-ANW was donated to a youth camp. On 26th January 1972, the DC-3 was flown from Melbourne to Gawler by Captain Peter Gibbes, the same pilot who had ferried it from Manila. At Gawler, VH-ANW was trucked 26 miles to the youth camp. About 1985, the owners of a McDonalds restaurant in Midland, Western Australia, purchased VH-ANW, renovated it at Parafield, and then trucked it to W.A. After reassembly and painting in MacRobertson Miller livery it was opened for in-flight dining in December 1987. In late 1999, McDonalds Australia donated the aircraft to the Western Australian Museum of Aviation.
