Photograph album of the Parker and Davidson Families

Photograph album of the Parker and Davidson Families

The album shows aspects of station life at various sheep properties in the far north east of South Australia and the Broken Hill region, among them Buckalow, Bimbowrie, Oulnina Park, Telechie, Burta, Topar, Tantallon and Yalcowinna as well as visits to other stations in New South Wales and Victoria namely Morundah, Widgeongully and Tolarno. Three young women thought to be Grace Langloh Parker (1895-1987) and her sisters Wilga Maud (1898-?) and Una Geraldine Davidson, nee Parker (1901-1986) are central to many of the photographs and it may be that the album was compiled by Grace Parker. Holiday visits were made to Victor Harbor, Port Elliot, Inman Valley, Second Valley, Mount Gambier, Portland Victoria, Sydney and Tasmania. A number of photographs relate to the BHP towns, Iron Knob and Broken Hill. Two of the Parker daughters, thought to be Wilga and Grace, accompanied their Mother on a voyage from Sydney to the Celebes and Java in 1926, including sightseeing at Macassar in the Celebes, the Mount Bromo Volcano, Sand Sea, Borobodur, and other places in Java with the homeward voyage via Singapore, Port Darwin, Thursday Island and Cairns.

Having successfully refloated the vessel he did not report it. Having completed loading he set out for England, but commenced leaking so badly that he had to take the ship into Port Adelaide for repairs (photo shows her on the slip being repaired). Mr. Baldock of Adelaide

Mr. Baldock of Adelaide

Head and shoulders view of Mr. Baldock, a pioneer member of the South Australian Telegraph Department in Adelaide. According to a researcher, this may be Albert Baldock who arrived with his parents, Robert and Susannah, as a thirteen year old in 1854 on the ship 'Evening Star'. Albert took up the profession of telegraph officer and worked at Goolwa around 1867-1869. According to his great-granddaughter, Albert was born on 25 January 1842 on Jersey, Channel Islands, to Col. Robert Walters Baldock and Susannah (Harden). The family arrived in South Australia on the Evening Star on 24 Nov 1854 and took up residence near Port Elliot. Albert commenced service with the South Australian Telegraph Department on 1 September 1855, possibly at Port Elliot. He was appointed to Goolwa as telegraph clerk on 1 June 1864, at the age of 22, and was married to Margaret Naomi Lush on 6 November 1865. In 1873 Albert was Telegraph Station Master at Blinman (Flinders Ranges) on the Overland Line to Darwin. He was a field officer, part of the team extending the telegraph line from Port Augusta to Eucla via Streaky Bay in 1875-6. On 1 December 1878 Albert was appointed by the Governor as Postmaster at Cape Borda on Kangaroo Island. Albert and Margaret's sixth and seventh children were born there. Albert's next appointment was at Meningie, from 1 May 1881 until his death on 2 April 1883 in Strathalbyn. The year after Albert's death, his daughter Catherine Susannah, known as Kate, was appointed to the Port Elliot Post Office and was transferred to Meadows in 1885 where she was postmistress until her marriage in 1887. Albert's son Albert Carey Baldock, known as Carey, was also employed as a telegraph officer - in Eucla, then Cossack and Broome in WA. Son Walter (Joseph Walters Baldock) was probably also employed in the Telegraph Department before his early death at the age of 22.

From Back of Rectory Willunga (Watercolour)

From Back of Rectory Willunga (Watercolour)

This work depicts a rural scene at Willunga looking 'From Back of Rectory'. It was painted 30 November, 1904 and is part of a selection of watercolour paintings by amateur artist, Thomas Wood, featuring scenes of Hahndorf, Port Augusta, Salt Creek near Port Lincoln, Port Lincoln, Calicalinga (Carrickalinga), Mount Barker, Wallaroo, Willunga and Noarlunga. Wood chose to uniquely sign his work with a symbol consisting of a design based on his initials, rather than a signature as such. This work depicts specific details of the scene including three visible "fallow" labelled in pencil, indicating fertilised areas of ground. The work also features the homestead, nestled into the side of a hill slope. The artist has included a tiny pencil drawing of another structure in the distance, in the centre of the work. Wood has also included three head of cattle in the foreground to indicate scale and to represent the rural nature of the setting. The skyline is met by a bright blue coastline which is in contrast to the dryness of the landscape. Although an amateur, Wood has provided an acurate example of the geography of the Willunga area in the early 1900's.

Hahndorf (Watercolour)

Hahndorf (Watercolour)

This work depicts a scene at Hahndorf. It was painted 16 April, 1910 and is part of a selection of watercolour paintings by amateur artist, Thomas Wood, featuring scenes of Hahndorf, Port Augusta, Salt Creek near Port Lincoln, Port Lincoln, Calicalinga (Carrickalinga), Mount Barker, Wallaroo, Willunga and Noarlunga. Instead of the unique signature symbol used in the work entitled 'From back of refectory' 1904, Wood has simply titled and dated this work. Wood attempts to create an ideal setting by limiting details to the bottom third section of the composition. A pencil line, where he has gauged the horizon, is still visible. This technique is used to intensify the scene. The eye is lead from the bottom left, where the fence begins to the centre of the path where two tiny figures stand. From there the path is followed to a low horizon line where eucalypts create a blue haze. In comparison to the two girls, the trees on either side of the path appear gigantic, which is indicative of the deeply wooded area around Hahndorf. The artist has consciously used techniques for creating distance and scale in this work and may be considered illustrative or contrived. However, the work is also a good example of what Hahndorf might have looked like in 1910, which is perhaps similar to how it appears now in some areas. The low horizon line extends to an atmosphere which further intensifies the tree canopy and the tiny figures below. Despite his amateur status as an artist, Wood has been able to illustrate a scene with conviction. Although an amateur, Wood has provided an acurate example of the geography of the Hahndorf area in the early 1900's.
