Hawkes Family photograph album

Hawkes Family photograph album

Album of the Hawkes Family, possibly containing photographs of Hawkes, Stebbing and Whittington families, and English relatives and siblings of Henry Hawkes and Francis William Hawkes, who married Mary Jane Whittington. The donor, Clifford Henry Hawkes, born 1898, indicated that the album belonged to his grandfather, Henry Hawkes. The album includes a one page family tree of Clifford Hawkes, compiled by the State Library, photographs of the original album (which has not been retained), several in memoriam cards (photos 56-59), and two Children's League certificates, belonging to Clifford Hawkes and Harold Hawkes. Most photographs are un-captioned, and a small selection have been digitised. The album is an interesting source of examples of carte-de visite and cabinet print portrait photography, along with one tintype photograph, by studios in Adelaide in the nineteenth century. These studios include H. (Henry) Jones, King William Street, Adelaide, L'Amico Fritz, 62 Rundle Street, Adelaide, S. (Saul) Solomon, 51 Rundle Street, Adelaide, P.J. Marchant, Waymouth Street, Adelaide, Edward Farndell, 83 Hindley Street Adelaide, W. J. Lott, Paris Photographic Co., 164 Rundle Street, Spicer Adey, 83 Hindley Street Adelaide, San Francisco Photo Co., Glen Osmond Road, Parkside, Hammer & Co. Art Studio, 6 Rundle Street, Adelaide, W. H. Hammer, Artist Photographer, 172 Rundle Street, Adelaide, Captain Sweet Studio, Flinders Street, Adelaide, T. (Townsend) Duryea, 66 & 68 King William Street, Adelaide, Thomas Adcock, Adelaide, James R. Dobson & Co. Photo Artists, Temple of Light, 44 Rundle Street, Adelaide, G. H. Knight, portrait and landscape photographers, and Melbourne Photographic Co., 16, 18 & 20 Rundle Street, Adelaide. The album shows the styles of clothing worn by babies, children and adults in the nineteenth century.
