The Register newspaper of 28 December 1927 describes the photograph as "taken in 1889, when Mr. C.H. Ferrors, previously of the Jetty Hotel, Glenelg, was its landlord. Mr. A.T. Saunders writes:- The man in the foreground with his legs cut off just below the knee was Mr. W. Jewell, son of Mr. Jewell, of Jewell and Nicholls, whose livery stable was behind and east of the Napoleon Hotel. Young Jewell went to India with horses in the early sixties and lost both feet and portions of both legs in a railway accident in India. When he returned to Adelaide our government had him taught telegraphy and he was stationed at Glenelg. The Register of 13/10/68 records that Mr. Jewell was also made harbourmaster at Glenelg. He left the service, and about Christmas 1897, assaulted the Right Hon. C.C. Kingston with a heavy stick, but Mr. Kingston pleaded for him and he was lightly punished."
