Portrait of William Nicholls, Caretaker. William Nicholls lived with his wife and family from 1876 to 1902 in an attached building behind the Institute Building, where there were apartments for the caretaker, taxidermists and others. In recognition of his years of service he was presented with a specially carved chair made for him. His obituary is in The Observer of 13 July 1907 on page 38. His son William Nicholls was headmaster at Pulteney Street School from 1901 to 1941, which for a time was nicknamed Nicholls' School after him.

Mrs Elizabeth Webb Nicholls (1850-1943) is remembered as a social reformer, women's activist, women's suffragist and editor of "Our Federation" the journal of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union. She played a large part in women getting the vote in South Australia in 1896. She became victorious when her platform for 6.0'clock closing succeeded in 1915. She justified all reforms on temperance and social purity.

Unlike previous desert explorations which used horses with disastrous results, Giles took camels and an experienced Afghan driver, Saleh. Giles arrived in Perth after successfully completing the crossing of central Australia from Beltana Station in South Australia to reach the West Australian coast. Giles made the return journey back across country, about 400 miles north from the first journey. Tietkens and Young returned to Adelaide by sea.
