Originally captioned as being the 'Early Millbrook Reservoir' which is incorrect.

Historical information

John Sladdin was born to George Sladdin and Mary Ann Nichols at Mount Gambier, South Australia on 18 September 1860. George had a photography and stationery business (1872-1900). It appears John joined his father in the business as they announced in January 1878 that G. Sladdin and Son 'will open their Photographic Studio at Penola for one month only'. John married Julia Lampard in Victoria. They moved to Lyndoch and their first two sons, Robert Sinclair and Alexander (Ack), were born there in 1893 and 1897. At that time a Thomas Sladdin was also working as a photographer in Lyndoch, and in 1899 Thomas and John were listed together for that year only. It appears that John and Julia moved to the south coast as their third son, Lindsay (Toby) George, was born in 1901 at Encounter Bay. Both Robert and Lindsay became professional photographers, the former at Victor Harbor and later Mount Gambier, the latter at Clare (and sometimes listed as Sladden). John Sladdin first appeared in the Sands and McDougall Directories as a photographer at Port Elliot in 1904. In 1905 he won a section at the Port Elliot Annual Show for a 'Collection of six photographs (not previously exhibited)'. Sladdin moved to Victor Harbor in 1916 working there until 1924, when his son, Robert, joined him. John and Julia moved to Clare, South Australia, where Julia died at the age of 59 in 1927. John was once more listed as a photographer, still in Clare, from 1935 to 1937. He died in Adelaide in 1947.
