Sailing Ship 'Zebra'

Sailing Ship 'Zebra'

Sailing ship 'Zebra'. She departed Altona, Hamburg on the 12th August, 1838, arriving at Port Misery, South Australia on the 28th December, 1838. Information taken from SA Memory website states that: 'The Zebra was a three masted ship, built in 1818 and weighing 350 tons, owned by J Dede of Altona, Germany. This artwork has been attributed to Jacob Boettger. He has paid attention to fine details of the vessel including sails, rigging and hull. The work was possibly painted from a model or from drawings of building plans of similar vessels, or perhaps the actual vessel as Boettger lived and worked in Altona. Painstaking measures have been employed to make finely detailed points including sails, rigging and ropes. The artist's interpretation of the work has a focus on the detail of the vessel itself and the sea lacks embellishment. Boettger made many maritime paintings usually depictig the vessels in profile and under full sail. Danish Captain Dirk Meinerts Hahn, as captain brought a group of almost 200 'Old Lutherans' to Adelaide aboard his ship the Zebra in 1838. In South Australia, Hahn assisted this group to obtain 150 acres of land near Mount Barker from William Hampden Dutton. In gratitude the people named the settlement after him - Hahndorf. The town was settled by Lutheran migrants largely from in and around a small village then named Kay in Prussia.'

Photographs of W.A. Robjohns

The series comprises 15 albums housing 1,973 photographs, most of which were taken by photographer W.A. Robjohns ca.1920-1966. Album covers were numbered and labelled by Robjohns. The sequence is incomplete, however, as only volumes 1-9, 12-14, 15, 20 and 23 have been donated. Robjohns' brief descriptions of content on the covers and spines are incomplete. For further descriptions of place names and subjects contained in each album, SEE details below. The albums contain small black and white prints, mostly undated, with captions by W.R. Robjohns. Also sepia and postcard prints, and a few hand-tinted prints. A small number of images were taken by other photographers, several of whom have been identified by Robjohns. Images depict Adelaide suburbs, city scenes and country towns, with an emphasis on rural landscapes, parks and reserves, rivers, reservoirs, streets, houses, churches, businesses and shop fronts, and public celebrations and processions. Also included are images of the Robjohns family on picnics and holiday outings, and their homes, cars and pets. A number of photos were duplicated or enlarged by Robjohns and appear in more than one album.

Workers including Mark Smith, George Mastrosavas, and Wayne Miller preparing to lay concrete around a new home at Koonibba. The photographer describes the Community, "The Koonibba Community is located in the vicinity of an Aboriginal ceremonial ground and traditional meeting place. The community was established in 1898 at a time when land on the west coast of South Australia was shifting from pastoralism to agriculture, it was originally a Lutheran Mission. The place now consists of a small township, surrounding land and the area around the Koonibba Rockhole. The township comprises administration buildings, the old Mission Church of the redeemer, community housing, school, childcare centre, hall, health clinic, workshop and various other buildings. Most of the existing structures are associated with the early phases of the Lutheran Mission. The area is 850ha, just off the Eyre Highway and 8km NNW of the township of Koonibba, 25km north west of Ceduna. On the day that these images where made I was lucky enough to record a number of resident tradesmen building new, and repairing old, community homes. I was also allowed to record some of the students from the primary school and in the childcare centre."
