[General description] Head and shoulders portrait of the subject in three quarter view. He wears a trimmed beard and moustache. He was a pioneering grazier in the mid north of South Australia who, together with his brothers John and Sidney made a journey up to northern Queensland to open up new grazing country, enduring much hardship. He ended his career as the Town Clerk at Jamestown. [On back of photograph] 'George Barr Yeates / Town Clerk / Jamestown / Arrived per ship 'Bardaster' / Captain Virtue / January 18, 1839 aged 14 years'.

Carrington Street, Adelaide

[General description] The one storey building in the middle of the photograph is the new addition to the Adelaide branch of the Humphris and Sons factory. The factory started out in Jamestown in 1882 making aerated water but later produced tonic ales and cordials. In 1888 tomato and other sauces, pickles and relishes were added to their range. The Hymphris' also operated a butter factory in Jamestown. On the right is a small cottage and a shop. [On back of photograph] 'Acres 487 and 488 / Carrington Street, south side / May 31, 1927. / The one story building on the near side of Humphris' factory was converted from a cottage in 1926. For photo. taken before the change, see B 3427. / Near side of factory extension is 12 1/2 yards east of Penny Place. Frontage of extended factory: 30 yards.'

Kaines Collection

Collection of 15 photograph albums, containing 2943 photographs taken by Jack Kaines from the time he finised school until the end of World War II. The photographs act as a pictorial documentary of his life showing the places he traveled to around South Australia and Australia, including many roadtrips and daytrips visiting friends and family. Many of the photographs show the various cars that he owned. The photographs taken during World War II initially show many other Servicemen, but subsequently become mostly tourist shots. Except for a small number of photographs taken in Fiji, the collection ends with his war photographs, and the last 30 years of his life is not captured in this collection. A selection of photographs from his albums have been digitised and can be searched on PRG 1638.

Sheep shearing team holding their hand shears and sheep ready for the shearing. Canowie Station is situated midway between Hallett and Jamestown, 180 kms north of Adelaide. It was renowned for offering swagmen two meals and a bed for the night.

[General description] Canowie Station homestead with a rocky creek in the foreground. Situated in the mid-north of South Australia (between Hallett and Jamestown) Canowie Station was a pastoral lease of originally around 60,000 acres. It ran high quality sheep and Shorthorn cattle.

Georgetown, Main Street, from the south. At first Georgetown flourished, but its prosperity declined when the railway line, at first proposed to pass through Georgetown and Narridy, was diverted to run through Jamestown and Caltowie to Port Pirie.

Railway coaling yard, Peterborough. The railway arrived in Petersburg (later Peterborough) in 1881 when the line from Jamestown opened. Carriage of ore from Broken Hill to the smelters at Port Pirie was the major contributor to the rail traffic through Peterborough with 70 trains a day passing through the town in 1898. Over the next fifteen years the line was recognised as the busiest single track railway in the world (1911-1914 especially so)

Racecourse Grandstand of Port Augusta. The previous grandstand of the Port Augusta Racecourse was replaced in 1915 by Mr W Kleeman of Jamestown. The railings were erected in 1917. The photograph shows a large two storey building with a hipped roof form. The upper level has a large grandstand with timber benches. The lower level contains clubrooms. in 1942 the Government acquired the racecourse to house 700 Chinese who had been evacuated from the Pacific Islands and were en route to the North to be used as labourers. The photograph shows a typical raceday in 1932 where the crowds fill the grandstand and surrounds. Their cars are parked in the foreground.

1920's "Overland" Motor Car

1920's "Overland" motor car in front of the post office at Ucolta; Peter McNeil stands by the car. According to a researcher, Peter James McNeil was born in 1854 and was married to Helen Borthwick. According to another researcher, he was born in 1851 and married to Mary Black, and is the son of Peter McIntyre McNeil who was married to Helen Borthwick. This birth date is confirmed in the book 'Change on Change' by Nancy Robinson, who indicates that he was 22 in 1873. The senior Peter McNeil died in a bushfire in Bundaleer Forest in 1867. Yet another researcher suggests that this photo is of Peter McNeil born 20th October 1887 at Eldoratrilla Station near Ucolta. Peter was a farmer at 'Bundeena 'five miles from Dawson. He died in 1967. Peter was son of James McNeil of Willimbo near Ucolta. James was killed in 1909 when he fell off his horse and ruptured his spleen. James was son of Peter McNeil who was killed in a bushfire at Bundaleer Run in 1867. Another researcher states that the man is definitely Peter McNeil from Bundeena near Dawson and thet the other two Peter McNeils mentioned were his grandfather and uncle. 'The first Peter McNeil (who married Helen Borthwick) died in a bushfire in 1867 at Bundaleer and his Uncle Peter McNeil who married Mary Black died in 1911 in Jamestown.' Peter McNeil in this photo is the researcher's husband's grandfather. This photo, she says, was taken well after the other two Peter McNeils had died.

[General description] Head and shoulders portrait of W.A. Dempsey in seven eighths view. He was a well-known Adelaide auctioneer in the firm of Dempsey, Wilkinson and Sandland in Jamestown and Adelaide.

King George V on horse "Erskine". According to a researcher, this horse was a gift from the South Australian Government to King George V on his coronation. The horse came from Erskine Station 55 kilometres north east of Jamestown.

Franklin Street, North Side in the late 1860's Looking North-east. The balcony on left faces west The side of the house faces south. The house stood back from Franklin Street about 8yds. and its back (on the right) was about 55 yds. west of Morphett St. Owned & occupied by Joseph Mellor(1808-1880) (manufacturer of agricultural implements) It was demolished in 1890's. Mellor and Brothers was a farm implement manufacturers in Adelaide circa 1868. Branches operated from Franklin Street, Kapunda, Jamestown and Quorn.

[General description] This building was the premises for F. Humphris & Sons Ltd. Bulk Store. The Jamestown based firm had a factory on Carrington Street manufacturing tomato sauces and chutneys, pickles and soft drinks. Parked in front of the building is an FJ Holden car. [On back of photograph] 'Acre 485 / Tom's Court, north end / 28th June 1963 / Right side of store is 71 yards north of Halifax Street / Frontage: 10 yards' There is a diagram showing the site.
