Historical information

No.728 William Claude Burford, son of William John Henry Burford and Caroline Amelia (nee Goodes), was born in Jamestown, South Australia, in 1894. He attended Jamestown Public School and worked as a labourer and missionary before he enlisted with the AIF at the age of 20 on 4 September 1914. He served as a Company Quartermaster Sergeant with the 12th Battalion, F Company, and the 4th Pioneer Battalion, and embarked with his unit from Hobart, Tasmania, on board the A2 'Geelong' on 20 October 1914. He served in Egypt, Gallipoli, and the Western Front, and was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in August 1916. He was killed in action in Pozieres, France on 3 August 1916. His older brother, No.3042 Private Anthony Ray Edward Burford, enlisted on 9 August 1915, served with the 27th and 32nd Battalions in Egypt and the Western Front, and was killed in action at Armentieres, France, on 20 July 1916.
