Mostly Holden cars are parked out front. Next door (right) is Harvey's, suppliers of milking machines and other agricultural implements. The verandah formerly continued the whole length of block; part of it was damaged in an accident in 1957 and removed. For view of shops on the left see B 13997. A Kombi Van, an FX Holden and a FJ Holden ute can be seen. As well as an Adelaide Cake Company van parked outside of a fish and chip shop.

Palace Hotel, M t. Gambier

Palace Hotel in Mount Gambier, a two storey building with wide verandahs and balcony featuring iron lace. It is in course of demolition. It was built by Mr. A. Keiselbach in 1884 and was run as a Coffee Palace. (See B 15847.) Since then the business changed hands several times. According to Bob Hoad (Hotels and Publicans in South Australia 1836- 1894) it was never licensed. Cars parked out front are a VW 'Beetle' and a Holden FC Station Wagon.

Station, Poonindie

Poonindie Station worked by Aboriginals. Note on the back of the photograph says "Minister Reverend Holden. Overseer Newland (Simpson Newland family) Church with chimney used as a residence by Bishop Hale. Bricks for church pugged with bullocks" . In 1848 the first bishop of Adelaide Augustus Short arrived in the colony with his Archdeacon Mathew Hale. They set out to educate the Aboriginal people in Christian values. In 1850 Hale set up his training institution on the River Tod at Poonindie and distributed rations to the local Aboriginal people. The centre became a close knit community and many Poonindie men became very good shearers, ploughmen and stockmen, also good cricketers. Later when the mission closed the residents moved to Point Pearce and Point McLeay.
