Images 81-82 of Ceylon, nos. 83-95 of Malta, 96-101 of Windsor Castle and St George's Chapel, Windsor, 102-103 of Oxford, and 104-107 of English coastal town/s. Items 108-111 (loose in back of album) are prints from clasical scenes. Attribution for the photographs are as follows: images 1-50, 73 are by Sweet; images 77-79, and possibly 80 are by Charles Bayliss. Overseas scenes (images 81-111) have not been copied.

View of Heinrich Jahn's Wellington Inn, situated on the north side of Currie Street and west corner of Leigh Street. There are three men standing in the doorway of the hotel, flower boxes in some of the upstairs windows, and the premises of businesses along the western side of Leigh Street can be seen in the background. [Jahn was licensee of the hotel between 1867-1873.]

Cottage on South bank of Torrens, near Morphett Street, residence of W.H. Campbell the Parklands Ranger. Cottage situated on the south bank of the River Torrens, a few yards west of Morphett Street Bridge. The cottage was demolished about 1910. Note on the back of the photograph states "Cottage on south bank of Torrens near Morphett Street. Identified by Mrs FC Finney as the residence of WH Campbell, Park Lands Ranger. Cottage situated on the south bank of the Torrens, a few yards west of Morphett Street Bridge. Mrs Finney is a step daughter of WH Campbell and lived in the house in the eighteen nineties. For exact site see C 271. Photographed about 1905. According to Mr E Brown, hairdresser of Hindley Street. The cottage was demolished about 1910" The photograph shows a whitewashed cottage with an iron roof surrounded by a well established garden of fruit trees, flowers and shrubs.

Angas Street, Adelaide, on the east corner of Queen Street: a house thought to have been used by either Colonel Light or Captain Sturt as a city office which was transferred from its original site on the corner of Hindley and Morphett Streets. Old shingle roof replaced by iron. Demolished between 1918 and 1923.

'Pepys Show Project' photographs

'Pepys Show Project' photographs

The 'Pepys Show Project' is a series of casual shots taken by John Hinds to record the happenings at 1986 Festival Events. Names, dates and places are recorded on printed cards for posterity. Photographs containing John Hinds were taken by David Morgan. Hinds describes the shots, "overall it is a joyous and nostalgic time capsule of people and dress".

Residence, Brighton

Stately residence of Hon J. Hodgkiss, Hove with two women riding sidesaddle near the front entrance. John Hodgkiss (1820-1897) was a businessman and a politician in the early days of the Colony of South Australia. After arriving from England in 1849 he owned businesses in Hindley Street and Rundle Street. He died at his residence, Lawn House, at Brighton. In 1862 he planted river red gums along the driveway to the residence, Frank Hayward House. The house was built in 1860. Minda purchased the property from Hodgkiss' niece and moved in there in 1911. The photograph shows a large two storey brick house with quoins, shutters on all six upper floor windows. A painted striped verandah runs along the front of the house and meets at the portico over the front entrance. The formal gardens are lined with low hedges which divide the geometric flower-filled garden beds.

John Hodgkiss

John Hodgkiss

[General description] Head and shoulders portrait of John Hodgkiss in three quarter view. He immigrated to Australia in 1849 and opened a drapery, 'Farmer & Hodgkiss' in Hindley Street, later moving the business to 28 Rundle Street when Farmer returned to England. It was later sold to Marshall & Co. He was elected to the Legislative Council in 1866, serving until 1872. He was re-elected in 1878, retiring in 1884 due to declining health.

James Marshall

James Marshall

James Waddell Marshall - draper, importer, furniture merchant, benefactor and business executive. After arriving in South Australia and marrying Annie Walters he dropped the name Waddell. With fellow assistant William Taylor they set up a store in Hindley Street. Later they bought another business in Rundle Street (Marshall's) which grew to be the largest of its kind in South Australia. He served on numerous boards and later lived with his second wife at Unley Park

Sir William Morgan

Sir William Morgan

Sir William Morgan, Premier, gold miner, free trade politician, produce merchant and wholesaler. He arrived in SA in 1849, worked on the land then went to the Victorian gold diggings. He established a wholesale and retail grocery shop in Hindley Street and later Currie Street. He entered politics in 1867, was Premier in 1878. He was far-seeing, imaginative and energetic. He was a self-made man with liberal opinions and was an excellent speaker.

Fire Brigade Motor unit crossing the intersection of Rundle and Hindley Streets during a test run on July 6, 1937. The South Australian Fire Brigade was formed in 1860 and operated from the Wakefield Street headquarters from 1892.

Dr Clindening's residence, North Terrace

Dr Clindening's residence, North Terrace

The residence of Dr William Talbot Clindening on North Terrace. Born in Belfast, Ireland on 6 January 1825, Dr Clindening arrived in South Australia aboard the 'Gipsy' in 1853. He practised medicine at Middleton, Mt Gambier and Kapunda prior to settling in Adelaide. The right side of house is 79 yards east of Morphett Street. See B 7379 for the building erected on this site in 1937. Behind the house Mrs F. Worley's Boarding House on Hindley Street can be seen. The Horsell family ran a boarding house on the left hand side of the building from 1878 and then took over the whole building in 1884 when Dr Clindening closed his practice there.
