A bullock wagon hauling wheat sacks past the Sir John Franklin Hotel, Kapunda. This hotel existed from 1849 and is located in Main Street Kapunda. Bullock trains travelled between Burra, Kapunda and Port Adelaide at three and a half miles per hour. The trip from Burra to Port Adelaide would take eight to ten days

Sir Henry became a prominent South Australian financier with lucrative mining interests at Burra Burra, later legislator and Premier of South Australia from 15th July 1863 - 4th August 1864. Knighted C.M.G, K.C.M.G and G.C.M.G. [On back of photograph] 'Bust of Sir Henry Ayers / Described by members of Sir Henry's family as a very poor likeness, the expression being quite at variance with his customary geniality'.

Sir Henry Ayers was the 8th Premier of South Australia serving a record 5 times between 1863 and 1873. He emigrated from England as a carpenter, worked as a law clerk, became secretary of the Burra Burra Mines, was elected to the first South Australian Legislative Council, held various positions until later becoming Premier.

Sir Henry Ayers , Premier of South Australia five times between 1863-1873. Ayers Rock/Uluru named for him. He emigrated as a carpenter to South Australia in 1840. Later appointed managing director of the Burra Burra Copper Mines. Elected to South Australian Legislative Council in 1857. He resided in Ayers House which had been built into a grand mansion.

George Hall M.L.C acted as Harbour Master to Thomas Lipson from 1840-1841. He started a business salt-curing beef. Worked on a cattle property near Angaston, then set up a shipping business in Port Adelaide. He was a committee member of SA Railway Company, Chamber of Commerce, Burra Burra Mine. He was a founder of SA Gas Company. He was elected to the Legislative Council and owned the property of Woodside House. The photograph is copied from glass portrait donated by Miss Alice E Hall of Frome House, North Terrace.

Dr William Peel Nesbitt

Dr William Peel Nesbitt (1850-1894) was born June 3, in Northampton, studied at Guy's Hospital and Edinburgh University, later settled in Burra in June 1875. Although never married his sister was his constant companion. After five civic bound years in Burra he became the medical officer at Yatala Labour Prison. He suffered bad health for twenty two years of his forty four years but is remembered for his untiring energy, clear and forceful writings. He was an originator, ingenious, persistent and successful

Left side is 53 1/2 yards south of Flinders Street, the frontage of the section under the main roof: 15 yards. Henry (Harry) Lockett Ayers, second son of Sir Henry Ayers married the daughter of Sir John Morphett and had two sons and three daughters. He ran a financial firm with his brother and among other distinctions was the proprietor of the Burra Burra Mine. Sir John Cox Bray was a solicitor, Member of the House of Assembly, Premier, Speaker of the House and Agent General for South Australia in London.

Photographs of W.A. Robjohns

The series comprises 15 albums housing 1,973 photographs, most of which were taken by photographer W.A. Robjohns ca.1920-1966. Album covers were numbered and labelled by Robjohns. The sequence is incomplete, however, as only volumes 1-9, 12-14, 15, 20 and 23 have been donated. Robjohns' brief descriptions of content on the covers and spines are incomplete. For further descriptions of place names and subjects contained in each album, SEE details below. The albums contain small black and white prints, mostly undated, with captions by W.R. Robjohns. Also sepia and postcard prints, and a few hand-tinted prints. A small number of images were taken by other photographers, several of whom have been identified by Robjohns. Images depict Adelaide suburbs, city scenes and country towns, with an emphasis on rural landscapes, parks and reserves, rivers, reservoirs, streets, houses, churches, businesses and shop fronts, and public celebrations and processions. Also included are images of the Robjohns family on picnics and holiday outings, and their homes, cars and pets. A number of photos were duplicated or enlarged by Robjohns and appear in more than one album.

Items relate to the war service of Lance-Corporal Leslie James Henry Harris, Service No. 77, 43rd Battalion, and in memory of his younger brother Lance-Corporal Horace Harris, Service No. 5352, 27th Battalion, who was killed in action in France on 20 September 1917. Small church, thought to be at Navan. Previously thought to have been at Kapunda. Navan Roman Catholic cemetery is located at Riverton. A note on the back of this photograph says that according to Mrs O'Donnell of Riverton this church was demolished in 1876 and the stone was used for the building of the Catholic Church of St John and St Paul at Tarlee. Tarlee came into existence as a stopover point on the road between Kapunda and Burra mines

Hotel at Mintaro

The Mintaro Hotel on Burra Street at Mintaro. Established as the Mintaro Hotel in 1850. From 19 March 1851 to 28 March 1854 it was known as the Magpie and Stump Hotel. It reverted to the Mintaro Hotel name in 1854 until 15 October 1976 when it again became known as the Magpie and Stump. A Southwark Bitter sign can be seen above the entrance.

Port Adelaide showing the Copper Company wharf. The English and Australian Copper Company built a smelter at Port Adelaide in 1861. It was built right on the river bank and produced copper ingots from the ore mined at Burra. The smelter operated until 1912. More wharves were constructed to cope with the expected arrival of ships carrying ore and coal and transporting the copper ingots to England and other countries.
