Historical information

James Bentley born in Kadina, 27th February 1879, youngest son of William and Elizabeth Bentley. Married Edith Pearce 6th April 1910 at Kooringa Methodist Church, Burra. First home was a cottage with a creek in the back yard which was flooded in Christmas 1914 and Easter 1915. James built a house near his mother in Crowan Street. James' father died in 1910. James had to relinquish his apprenticeship at the Post Office to work at Drew and Crewes Emporium in Burra for a higher wage in able to support his mother and unmarried sisters. He managed the grocery story and together with a Mr. Penrose who managed the drapery section, would take a covered wagon out to McBrides and other stations with shearing orders. He conducted the Ladies Band for many years. Moved to Linden Park in 1935 possibly because his eldest girls Mary and Nell had already come to Adelaide to train as nurses and youngest daughter Joy soon followed. James set up his grocery store on Greenhill Road, Glenside (then Knoxville), calling it Bentley's Stores and bought a house in Tusmore. James retired in 1952 and his son-in-law, John Rogers took over the business with a Mr. Macklin, renaming the business Macklin and Rogers. James died in 1955, aged 75 years.
