"Phaeton"

"Phaeton" used by Hon. J. Lewis at Burra. The phaeton was a sporty open carriage that was popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was drawn by one or two horses, had four extravagantly large wheels, open seating and was known for its dangerous speed. The Hon. J Lewis was a pastoralist, country grazier and a Member of the Upper House.

According to the Burra History Group, this photograph was taken in Market Square, Kooringa, Burra c.1881. The summaries below from the Burra Record have assisted in identifying the location. In 2014 the Burra pharmacy is located on this site. Burra Record 8 October 1880, Page 2 D.S. Packard, solicitor, has moved from the south side of Market Square to offices between Drew & Co.'s store and the Record office. Mr J.F. Duff, the representative of Goodchild, Austin & Co., has moved from his old office to the one next door to Mr Packard's. Burra Record 4 November 1881, Page 2 Advt. The Northern Gem Photographic Co. have erected their studio in Henderson's Machine Yards, Kooringa. Instantaneous Gem Portraits 5/- per dozen, finished and delivered in 15 minutes. An early (daguerreotype) portrait of Henry Ayers, accompanied by a note signed by Ayers explaining the photo was taken a few years after his appointment as Secretary of the Burra Burra mines in 1845: 'This was taken by a travelling Artist at the Burra sometime in 1847 or 1848 when I was 26 or 27 years old. It was greatly esteemed by my Dear Wife as a capital likeness of --- H.A.'

Records of the Reverend Arthur M. Trengove comprising lantern slides and glass plate negatives. The family hiking day series is most likely to be in the Flinders Ranges in proximity to the Alligator Gorge or Beetaloo Reservoir area. There are also images of the Trengove children, Miss Rosalie and Master Ronald at various stages of age. Trengove has carefully posed many of the images and has made an effort to create interesting scenes for his family subjects, which also include details in the background like landscapes or houses and fences.
