[General description] The number 27 electric tram to Albert Park trundles past the imposing Ozone Theatre in a city streetscape otherwise featuring horse drawn transport. On the right is the Town Hall clock tower and a couple of public telephone booths. Shops and commercial buildings line the street. [General description] The News caption of this photograph is as follows: 'The Lord Mayor (Mr. A.G. Barrett) wearing his new robes at the unveiling, in the Adelaide Town Hall today, of an honor roll, giving the names of all Mayors and Lord Mayors of Adelaide.' King William Street, Adelaide
King William Street, Adelaide,east side, featuring the Prince Alfred Hotel, built in 1869 and delicenced in 1953. J.P. Hearns has just taken over as licencee from W. Peck. In front of the hotel horse cabs for hire are standing. On the left the empty clockface of the Town Hall can be seen. [The clock was installed in 1935.] The left side of the hotel is 46 yards south of Pirie Street.


Pirie Street, Adelaide
Wesleyan Church, Pirie Street, Adelaide, south side. A man is standing in front of the gate. The foundation stone was laid on the 15th July, 1850 and the building was finished in the early 1850s. It was demolished in 1964 due to structural problems and declining congregations. The Town Hall tower can be seen in the background on the right. See B 2874 and B 974 for earlier views.

[General description] View west along a muddy and rutted Grenfell Street towards King William Street with Currie Street in the distance past Gouge's Fountain. The offices of the Register are partially obscured by trees. On the extreme left is Bennett & Barton, Land Auction Mart. [On back of photograph] 'Acres 141 and 142 / Grenfell Street / south side / Division between the acres is roughly the boundary between Bennett & Barton's and the two storey building next door / About 1866 / Bennett & Barton's were here for a few months only, their names not appearing in directories and rate books in this situation / The presence of Gouge's fountain means that the date is prior to 1868 and a comparison with B 105 where Bennett & Barton and the Town Hall tower are associated gives a date subsequent to the latter part of 1865 / The erection of the two storey building next to Bennett & Barton's was begun in 1865 (See B 5099) / It was still in process of construction in February 1966 (Register February 24, 1866, 5c).

An ornamental urn with four lion's heads is mounted on a parapet seen in the right foreground. Note the iron railings around the Victoria Square gardens.
