Built for the UK-NZ trade].

The iron ship 'Turakina' ex 'City of Perth, 1247 tons, in an unidentified port. [As City of Perth = iron ship, 1247 tons, ON60352, 232.5 x 35.4 x 22.2. Built 1868 (5) C. Connell and Co. Glasgow. Owners George Smith and Sons. Registered Glasgow, renamed Turakina in 1882 by the New Zealand Shipping Co. Ltd. Registered Lyttelton, register tansferred to London in 1888 and vessel sold in 1899 to Norwegians and renamed Elida and rigged as barque. Stranded at Timaru, NZ, when named City of Perth in May 1882, salvaged and returned to England for full repairs, and sold to New Zealand Shipping and renamed. Remained in New Zealand trade until sold in 1899. Made a famous run of about 14 days in company with and sometimes outdistancing the same owner's steamer Ruapehu in the southern Indian Ocean.]

Captain Dickson transferred registration to Brisbane in 1872 and sold vessel August 1877 to Thomas Brooks and John Goodsir, registered Newcastle; May 1882 Thomas Kehoe, registered Sydney, who in turn sold it to William V Brown of Townsville and it was most likely converted into a hulk about the mid 1880s. The registration was closed in 1913 when advice received the vessel had been broken up].

Came to Australia in March 1862 owned by Thomas Must, registered Portland, Victoria. In September 1862 sold to Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty and the Province of South Australia. Sold out of Government service July 1890 owner Richard Honey, registered Port Adelaide. Stranded near Port Lincoln Feb. 4 1897. Recovered re-registered now 81 gross and 72 net tons. Transferred to Port of Melbourne in July 1917 and lost at Waterhouse Island, Bass Strait in 1921. Purchased for survey work and spent some time in the Northern Territory.
