Summary

Circular Quay in the 1890's with the S.S. 'Gulf of Taranto' [steel steamship, 3431 gross, 3125 net tons. ON99775, 350.0 x 42.1 x 26.8. Built 1892 (5) Caird and Co. Greenock. Triple expansion recip. steam engine, 398 nhp. Owners: Gulf Line Association Ltd., registered Greenock, 1904 sold to German owners and renamed. At the time the photograph was taken in 1892 the ship was working for the 'Thames and Mersey Line'. She only made the one return voyage in the service. See 'North Star to Southern Cross' by Mabar. This section comprises scenes of Circular Quay 1870-1890.

This image is from the A.D. Edwardes Collection of about 8,000 photographs, mostly of sailing ships from around the world, taken between about 1865 and 1920. Mounted in 91 albums, the photographs are arranged by country of ownership, with some special volumes such as 'Shipping at Port Adelaide' and 'South Australian outports'. Additional information, giving the history of the ships where known, has been provided by maritime historian, Ron Parsons.
