South Australian Institute

The southern part of the South Australian Institute, North Terrace was constructed in 1860 and opened in 1861. It is a grand example of a Victorian building built in the Renaissance style and was designed by architect EA Hamilton. The northern part was opened in 1907. It is the oldest cultural building along North Terrace.

[General description] The impressive Edwardian style red brick Goodman building, sited on Hackney Road. It is named after Sir William George Toop Goodman who was chief engineer (1907-1950) and manager (1908-1950) of the Municipal Tramways Trust (MTT) of South Australia where he oversaw the construction of South Australia's tramways. The "Antares" iron ship built in 1888 and wrecked off the south west coast of Victoria in 1914. The ship was sailing from Marseilles to Melbourne via the southern Australian coastline when it came to grief on a rocky outcrop near Peterborough with a loss of all crew. Originally named "Sutleg", renamed "Antares"by Italian owners

She was abandoned after going on her beam ends off the west coast of Canada in 1907, and drifted into the Columbia River. Later converted to a coal hulk

No.6894, Lance-Corporal Juan Ricardo, born Unley, South Australia, 21 April 1883. Enlisted 8th Field Ambulance 1 July 1915, Served France. Returned to Australia 1919. Juan's parents were Gomez Ricardo and Mary nee Newton, Mary died 6 October 1894. Gomez married Bertha Lee 23 August 1903. Juan married Clara Layton 19 June 1907 and their son, Louis Joseph, was born Adelaide 25 December 1910.
