Historical information

Cornelius Rex Sheahan 'Captain Rex' was born at Wentworth (NSW) in 1908. His mother was Florence Dorothea Porter, eldest daughter of Captain William Robert Porter. He did his schooling at Broken Hill. He left there when 18 years old and came to Mannum (SA) where he met Captain Charlie Good, master of the paddlesteamer 'Queen' and was given a job as deckhand for 2 pounds, 16 shillings working seven days a week. He worked his way through the ranks from deckhand to bargemaster with the Murray Shipping Ltd and then earned 4 pounds 10 shillings as a mate. Ships he worked on were 'Waikerie', 'Success', 'W.F.B.', 'Murrabit', 'Colonel', 'Ruby', 'Renmark', 'Gem' and 'Decoy'. He left the river in 1930. On 21 December 1967 'Captain Rex' obtained his captain's certificate. He was 59 years of age. He was first mate on the 'Coonawarra' and became captain shortly after. He was captain of the 'Murray River Queen' and for a short time the PS 'Julie Fay' out of Mannum. He was then captain of the 'Proud Mary' at the age of 74 years. He then captained the MV 'Kookaburra' until ill health forced him to give up the river work. He passed away on 14 April 1994 at Murray Bridge. [Information provided by his son, Brian Sheahan.]
