Hannah Fisk

Hannah Maria Fisk, daughter of William and Rebecca Fisk. She arrived in South Australia from Suffolk with her parents on 31 July 1854 aboard the 'Historia'. On 21 December 1869 she married Philip Trelore Hill, they had six children between 1870 and 1884. Hannah died on the 16 October 1890, aged 44.

Edward Charles Frome

Edward Charles Frome (1802-1890) soldier, surveyor. Arrived in Adelaide in 1839 after he was appointed the third Surveyor General of South Australia. When he arrived he discovered that many of the sections already occupied near Adelaide had been inaccurately marked by Sir George Kingston. He also undertook, without pay, the duties of Colonial Engineer. He was an artist and his pictures depict life in the new colony of South Australia.

Christopher Giles

[General description] Head and shoulders portrait of Christopher Giles senior. He has a trim beard and moustache and wears a jacket and cravat with pin. He arrived in the colony in 1849 with substantial assets and took up a run at Ketchowla (in the state's north east) with Mr. H. Boucaut. The enterprise eventually failed due to severe drought and he moved to Adelaide in 1864. His son Christopher junior, trained as a surveyor, was associated with the Goyder Expedition and the Overland Telegraph.

Alfred Langler of the Register staff, The Register was originally known as the South Australian Gazette and Colonial Register and later the South Australian Register was South Australia's first newspaper. It was first published in London in June 1936 and moved to Adelaide in 1837. Alfred Langler lived in Adelaide from 1890 - 1895, after this he moved to Perth.

South Australian wine makers

Douglas Austral Tolley (left, seated), Ernest Alfred Tolley (centre, standing) and Dr. Thomas Scott (seated), well known South Australian wine makers. Tolley, Scott and Tolley had its origins as the East Torrens Wine Making Distillation Company at Nelson Street, Stepney in 1858. Thomas Scott employed the two brothers as apprentices in London after they gained experience in winemaking overseas. In the early 1890s following a glut of grapes a distillery was erected at Nuriootpa to produce fortified wines and TST brandy

[General description] The warehouse of Good, Toms & Company, wholesale drapers. This well proportioned three storey brick building has a stone facade with classical features. The name of the firm appears in relief on a pediment atop the ornamental parapet. [On back of photograph] 'Acres 19 and 44 / Stephens Place, east side / Left side of Good, Toms is 75 yards north of Rundle Street. / 1890-1900 / Compare with B 130 and see directories for position of Good, Toms and Co.' This view must date before 1890 because the 1889 directory is the last to contain these little cottages.

Hindley Street, Adelaide, north side, in October, 1890. A group of men lean on a lamp-post in front of the Theatre Royal. Another group in top hats are about to enter through the 'Dress Circle' door, whilst a horse and buggy stand in the foreground. A billboard in front of the theatre advertises 'The Candidate', a comedy by Harry Saint Maur (in which he also starred) starting on November 4th; probably in 1886 as this production played at the Melbourne Theatre Royal in October in that year. Built in 1878, replacing a theatre built in 1868, it was eventually demolished in 1962 by Miller Anderson and Co., an Adelaide department store which erected a car park on the site. Extreme right of the photograph is 50 yards west of Gresham Street. Extreme left is 2 yards east of Peel Street.

[General description] A buggy drawn by a pair of grey horses is standing in the foreground of this view of the Clarence Hotel. People are grouped on the large balcony, others are standing in front of the building. G.R. Dowdy and J. Lewis were the licensees of this hotel 1891-99, later in 1917 the name was changed to the Majestic until its demolition in 1981. There was a hotel on this site since 1857. [General description] This neo-classical building features decorative balustrading on the parapet and upstairs balconies. Above the main arched doorway on both floors the keystone is carved with a human face. The building was used by the Grand Lodge of Freemasons, South Australia from 1884. [General description] Set between the foreground of the wide dirt road and the sky are the imposing stone buildings of Christian Brothers College. The Foundation Stone was laid by the Catholic Bishop (later Archbishop) C.A. Reynolds, fourth bishop of Adelaide, on 15 August 1878. Classes began on 20 January 1879. The classroom block on the left was demolished in 1961 to make way for the widening of Ackland (now Frome) Street. In this photo the school is surrounded by a corregated iron fence.
