Mt. Gambier looking east along Commercial Street in 1890. Jens Hotel built in 1884 can be seen next to the Town Hall which was built in 1882. The clock tower was donated by TC Ellis of Benara Station in 1883. In the foreground on the left stands the verandah of Mac's Hotel which was named after the first licensees, Mr MacDonald and Mr McKenzie. The McKenzie sign can just be seen above the verandah near the ornate lamp post

Tents can be seen in the dusty distance. The station itself is a solid stone building with an adjoining timber clad building.

For almost 4 months central Queensland was preoccupied with a feud between shearers striking against working conditions and wealthy squatters. Paddle Steamer "Florence Annie" operated on the Murray-Darling river system between Bourke and Adelaide in the 19th century carrying mostly wool bales

View of Burrundie township, a railway line between Port Darwin and Pine Creek. It was approximately 140 kilometres south east of Darwin. On the back of the photograph is the following: " In the early days of mining in the Territory Burrundie was the centre of operations for many years and was a busy township, boasting a government hospital, two stores, a Warden's residence and a court house. Those buildings, with others, were removed to Pine Creek which was for many years the railway terminus and superseded Burrundie as the mining centre". This photograph taken in approximately 1890s shows many buildings, railway signals, water tanks on stilts for the trains nestled in bushland with hills in the background.

D. Golding's boot shop, Port Elliot. The proprietor and his family and workers are standing outside the Port Elliot Boot Makers. The building stands alone with sapling fences either side. One side of the shop is possibly the Golding house. David Golding was born in Cambridge, England, and departed Plymouth on Friday 1 July 1853 and arrived in Port Adelaide, South Australia on Wednesday 12 October 1853 on board the 'Standard', along with his brother Stephen. He settled in Port Elliot and established a business as a bootmaker and in 1857 married Mary Ann Barker; together they had seven children. The family journeyed north and established a farm and later a general store at Laura, South Australia. Mary Ann Golding died in 1890, aged 62 years, and David Golding died in 1903, aged 73 years, and left one daughter living, Mrs J. Bowering of Petersburg, along with six grandchildren. The following information was provided by a family member: David Golding was born with a deformed foot so he learnt how to make boots so he could have shoes to fit himself. He later moved to Laura when his wife developed tuberculosis, the doctor advising they move to a drier climate. A few of their children died during the trip north. The young boy on the right may be David's son David Laurence Golding.

Portrait of Bejah Dervish: He was the man who went up North-West, and discovered the bodies of Jones and Wells, the lost explorers. Signature on reverse of original. He was born in Baluchistan now part of Pakistan. He served with British Forces at Kandahar and Karachi under Lord Roberts. He moved to Australia in 1890. He was a camel driver and eventually settled in Maree and operated his camel transport business. He made a major contribution to the development of South Australia

John Henry Smyth Blood

John Henry Smyth Blood

John Henry Smyth Blood of Blood's Creek second son of Dr M. Blood. He was born in County cCare and grew up in Kapunda. He worked on the construction team establishing the Overland Telegraph where he later became the Post Master and Telegraph Officer at the Peake Station. He held the position of Grand Master of the Freemason Lodge. John married Mary Enock and they had five children. He died at Auburn aged 49

Neville Blyth

Neville Blyth

[General description] Head and shoulders portrait of Neville Blyth, with a greying beard and moustache. With his family and more famous brother, Arthur, he emigrated to Adelaide in 1839. The brothers were successful ironmongers, land investors and politicians. Neville returned to England around 1878 where he died in 1890.

William Allen Crouch

[General description] Portrait of William Allen Crouch showing his bushy white beard and kindly face. He is wearing a woollen jacket and waistcoat with a bow tie. William Allen Crouch was one of the earliest settlers in Mount Gambier. He owned land in the MacDonnell Bay district which he surveyed and subdivided into the township he called Allendale, and named the streets after his children Edmund, William and Geraldine. He was the first man to use Mount Gambier stone for buildings. He was a storekeeper, postmaster, National Bank agent, land and shipping agent before retiring to "Lowan Homestead" at Kalangadoo. Frederick Hansborough Dutton

Frederick Hansborough Dutton, founder of Anlaby was the third son of Frederick Hugh Hampton Dutton. Son Frederick (1812-1890) took up a sheep run which had been founded by Captain John Finniss and named it Anlaby. As well as being a grazier he was a Member of the Upper House, mining investor, overlander and sheep breeder. He invested in copper and later left Anlaby, which was the oldest stud sheep station in South Australia, to his nephew Henry Dutton
