PORTRAIT: Francesco Setaro, a well known Italian violinist and composer resident in Adelaide in the 1890s. He was conductor and founder of the well-known Setaro's String Band. He was born in Viggianno, Italy in 1868, and came to Australia at the age of 20 as a member of a special band engaged to play at the opening of the Jubilee Exhibition and stayed on. He was the author of several popular compositions including 'Farmyard', 'The Canary Waltz' and 'The Cats' Polka'. Obituary, The Advertiser, 18 January 1926, p13. Portrait of John Knuckey, one in a composite of 'Men of South Australia'. John Randall Knuckey was born at Stithians, Cornwall, 29 March 1845 to Richard Knuckey and Persis Reed. He married Louisa Calnan and they had 8 children. At the time of his death at Kensington Park, South Australia on 19 July 1890 he was Inspector of Telegraph and Telephone Lines. John also worked on the Overland and Fowler's Bay telegraph lines.

'P.S. Hero' and other paddle steamers and barges tied up at Echuca wharf at very low river level, with wharf towering high above the river boats. [A researcher believes the boats moored behind the 'P.S. Hero' are are 'P.S. Melbourne' and 'P.S. Edwards' and that the photograph is taken much later than 1890, perhaps late 1940's].

He took his vessel up to Bourke during what was probably the 1890 flood, and then had to beat the receding floodwaters back to safety. His daughter Jessie married Tom Desailly, and they spent a number of years at Brewarrina Station.

An article in the Border Watch dated 5/3/1898 states that the vessel called the Perseverance was built by Mr Anderson of Port MacDonnell for Mr D. Matheson at a cost of 800 pounds.
